Job description
Introductory text
Are you in your final year of study? Don't wait until after your exams, apply now and get a chance at a training position! Do you want to prepare as well as possible for your interview with the Advisory Committee for Entry (ACI)? Then visit a "day in the life" event at the Royal Netherlands Naval College (KIM) via the link above.
Do you want to further develop your technical talents? As a Technical Service Officer, you will lead a team responsible for all (electro)technical installations on board naval vessels.
This is what you will do
As a Technical Service Officer in the Navy, you are responsible for the condition monitoring, readiness, and maintenance of the (electro)technical installations on board one of the many types of ships. As an Officer, you will also advise the ship's operational commander on the deployment and deployability of the various systems. Finally, you will lead and coordinate the work of a team of technical specialists. As an experienced officer, you can also be deployed ashore, for example, in one of the many technical support functions. This includes new construction, design, acquisition, maintenance, and decommissioning of ships (life cycle management). In addition, there are many technical functions at the various Navy schools, where you are responsible for training technical personnel or for knowledge management, for example. In your role as Technical Officer, (maritime) technology is always central, but you are also a military officer. This means that your technical work must always be considered against the situation in which you are working. You will assess situations, make tactical judgments, and demonstrate leadership by making choices. A Technical Service Officer is a jack of all trades!
PLUS POINTS OF THIS FUNCTION
- Salary: your gross basic salary, combined with allowances and our favorable travel expenses, pension, and health insurance schemes, will result in a pleasant net surprise.
- Work atmosphere: you will never be part of such a close-knit team of colleagues as you will be in the Defense organization.
- Growth opportunities: Defense is not only an employer but also a large training institute where you can follow courses to grow personally and professionally.
This is where you will work
Before you can start as a Technical Service Officer, you will first complete a challenging technical training at the Royal Netherlands Naval College in Den Helder. The total duration of the training is 2 years and 3 months, including a six-month internship on board a ship. In the first year, you will receive all the knowledge you need to do your job on board through theoretical and practical education. You will follow a General Military Basic Training and you will go sailing several times on board one of the many ships. In addition, you will receive technical vocational training, where you will cover all the specific subjects needed to function in your first role as a Technical Service Officer. After completing the Technical Training, you will undergo an 'internship' on board a ship. Over a period of approximately six months, you will complete your task book through various assignments on board. This way, you will quickly learn all the components of the ship and your tasks. During the following years, you will gain knowledge and experience in various technical officer roles on board. You can start as a system responsible officer for weapons, sensors, or networks within the Technical Service for Sensors, Weapons, and Communication Systems. In a subsequent role, you can continue as a system responsible officer for propulsion systems, energy technology, or platform technology within the Technical Service for Platforms. This allows you to grow into an overall responsible person for all technical installations as Head of Technical Service. You will then use your training and sailing experience throughout your career as a Technical Service Officer. Versatility in technology within a maritime-military environment will always be central to this!
Maybe you are doubting. We are not. We see not only who you are now but also who you can become. What you can't do today, you will learn tomorrow. With good training, education, guidance, and a team that supports you.
