What you will do

As a Senior Editor, you will help inform society and over 80,000 military and civilian personnel about what is happening within Defensie.

You will first complete a shortened officer training course at the Royal Military Academy in Breda. Afterwards, you will follow a short follow-up training in Apeldoorn, where you will learn what you need to master under operational conditions. Subsequently, you will start working in the editorial office in The Hague.

You will regularly go on assignments at home and abroad and visit units at bases, barracks, and in mission areas. You will often work with a photographer and videographer. You will write compelling articles about developments within Defensie, such as new ways of (international) operations, innovations, and the deployment of new aircraft, vessels, and vehicles. Additionally, you will write and edit news items, reports, interviews, and background stories for our magazines, Defensie.nl, and the defense intranet.

As a Senior Editor for the defense magazines, Defensie.nl, Defensiedichtbij.nl, and the defense intranet, you will be involved in:

• Writing and editing reports, interviews, background articles, and news items
• Identifying and interpreting relevant (geo)political and military developments within and outside Defensie
• Liaising with communication advisors, spokespersons, and subject matter experts
• Translating complex, sometimes sensitive information into understandable, accessible, and target group-oriented content
• Publishing content in our CMS systems (Bloomreach, Umbraco, and Tridion)
• Advising on online content, structure, digital accessibility, and findability (SEO)
• Contributing to the further development of our online channels

You preferably have at least 2 years of editorial experience, affinity with Defensie or government communication, knowledge of SEO, digital accessibility, and CMS systems. A Bachelor's or Master's degree in journalism or communication is desirable. You are flexibly deployable, stress-resistant, and available full-time.

Where you will work

You will start as a military officer at the Defensie Media Centre (MCD). The MCD produces text, photography, video, and graphic content about and for Defensie. The media center consists of six departments: Command Group, Operations, Planning & Production, Editorial, AV Support, and Crossmedia. The main office is located in The Hague.

You will be part of an experienced editorial team that collaborates on clear, accessible, and reliable communication. Working from home is partially possible in consultation. Additionally, you will regularly be on assignments, for short or longer periods, at home and abroad.
