Military Doctor Officer

Introduction

Please note: it is possible that training positions will only become available in 2026.
We select twice a year via the Admission Committee Intake. You will then start either at the beginning of the year or in the autumn.

What you will do

As a Military Doctor Officer in the Royal Netherlands Air Force, you will provide integrated care. This means that you simultaneously wear the hat of general practitioner, occupational physician, insurance physician, examining physician (flight medical examinations), and GGD physician. You will therefore view every patient from each of these perspectives. Within the Air Force, you will be trained as a flight physician and in most cases as an accompanying physician for aeromedical evacuation (Aeromedical Evacuation/AE). This will prepare you well for the different working conditions you may encounter.

The work is carried out within the Operational Healthcare (OGZ) of the Center for Human and Aviation (CML). The goal of the OGZ is operational deployment. This deployment takes place to support CLSK operations, provide AE for the entire Armed Forces, and to medically support Defense operations in general. In addition to functional staff, the OGZ consists of a Commander with Staff Employees and various doctors (AMA), nurses (AMV), and medical orderlies (AGV).

The tasks of the OGZ include:

• Aeromedical Evacuation (AE), both fixed wing and rotary wing;
• Deploying a Casual Staging Unit (CSU) (ground-air interface in medical evacuation chain);
• Deploying a Role 1 with flight medical capacity;
• Search And Rescue (SAR) (postponed for the coming years);
• Other support.

Furthermore, as an AMA, you can (partially) work within the Primary Healthcare Company, where you, as an AMA flight physician, provide integrated primary care.

Where you will work

As a Military Doctor Officer in the Air Force, you are wherever our men and women are. On an air force base but also in the field during exercises and deployments. The environment has a significant impact on the care you can provide. Under operational conditions, you have fewer diagnostic possibilities than under peacetime conditions. In emergencies, you usually cannot refer quickly and you will have direct care for your patient for an extended period.

But before that happens, you will first follow the abbreviated officer training for specialists of approximately 10 weeks at the Royal Military Academy in Breda, followed by the two-year training to become a Military Doctor Officer at the Defense Medical Training and Education Center in Hollandse Rading.

You will start in a challenging entry-level position as a doctor in a health center. You can progress to become a diver, flight, or occupational physician. If deemed suitable, you may be able to work as a supervisor in a management position.
