Job description

Introductory text

Does coordinating appeal to you particularly? Are you adventurous and do you want to contribute to peace & security as a leader? And have you (almost) obtained your VWO diploma? Then Air Defence Officer is for you! As an Air Defence Officer, you will lead and contribute to the (NATO) air defence capability.

What you will do

Air superiority is crucial for all crisis management tasks or combat situations. Air defence contributes significantly to this by protecting vital objects, units, and areas.

The Ground-Based Air Defence Artillery is responsible for protecting important objects, military units, populations, and areas from air attacks by enemy drones, aircraft, and missiles from the ground.

The Defence Ground-Based Air Defence Command (DGLC) has various weapon systems with which the air defence task is carried out:

  • AMRAAM platoons equipped with a fire control system, a radar, and AMRAAM launch installations, where the air picture is built up and enemy air targets are engaged from a command post with a fire control system.
  • Stinger platoons with Fennek vehicles, equipped with the Stinger weapon, to support mobile land operations.
  • A Stinger platoon to support, for example, air-mobile units, equipped with the Stinger weapon, which is fired from the shoulder (man-portable air defence system).
  • A Counter Unmanned Aircraft System (C-UAS) platoon with sensors, cameras, and weapons that are fired from the shoulder to intercept drones.

As an Air Defence Officer, after training, you will start in a leadership position as a platoon commander or in a coordinating role as a Tactical Control Officer at the Defence Ground-Based Air Defence Command (DGLC) in Vredepeel. Here you will be responsible for the operational readiness of your personnel (approximately 30 as a platoon commander and 2 as a tactical control officer) and materiel.

ADVANTAGES OF THIS POSITION

  • Salary: in addition to your gross basic salary, our allowances, favourable travel expenses, pension, and health insurance schemes will provide you with a pleasant net surprise.
  • Work atmosphere: nowhere will you be part of such a close-knit team of colleagues as in Defence.
  • Growth opportunities: Defence is not only an employer but also a large training institute where you can follow (paid) training to grow personally and professionally.

NOTE: This vacancy is for the start date of August 30, 2027, in Breda.

Where you will work

As an Air Defence Officer, you will work in a leadership position as a platoon commander or in a coordinating role as a Tactical Control Officer at the Defence Ground-Based Air Defence Command (DGLC) in Vredepeel.

Before you start, you will first follow the Military Scientific Education at the Royal Military Academy (KMA) of the Netherlands Defence Academy (NLDA) in Breda, followed by a Technical Training at the Defence Ground-Based Air Defence Command in Vredepeel.

The Royal Netherlands Army takes your placement preference into account, but may deviate from the initial placement preference for organizational reasons. The Royal Netherlands Army will inform you about your actual placement during the Technical Training.
