Air Defence Officer (VWO)

Can you concentrate well, are you alert, and do you not hesitate to make decisions? Then you possess qualities that are extremely valuable in defending our airspace. As an Air Defence Officer, you will lead a team responsible for operating Patriot systems.

This is what you will do

As an Air Defence Officer, you will lead a team of two fire control NCOs, a maintenance NCO, and a launch crew. With your team, you are part of the Guided Weapons Group of the Defence Ground-Based Air Defence Command in Vredepeel (near the municipality of Venray). This unit is equipped with Patriot systems, which can be deployed quickly anywhere in the world to search for, locate, and intercept targets with radar from low to high altitudes and at long distances. The Patriot system consists of a radar, a fire control centre, and several launch platforms from which missiles are fired. In the fire control centre, you will scan the airspace with the radar, looking for unknown aircraft or projectiles. Together with your team, you will decide whether or not to launch a missile, but the final responsibility rests with you. You will ensure the good technical condition, setup, and operation of the systems. To guarantee quick and good deployability of the system, you will train regularly with your team. During your service, you will also certainly experience large exercises in other NATO countries and a live firing exercise in Crete.

This is where you will work

You will work at the Defence Ground-Based Air Defence Command in Vredepeel (on the border of Limburg and North Brabant). The unit consists mainly of soldiers from the Army and Air Force, but also from the Navy. You may also be deployed elsewhere in NATO to guard the airspace. Before you start working in the fire control centre, you will follow a Military Scientific Education (MWO) at the Royal Military Academy (KMA) in Breda and a vocational training. You will follow the Bachelor's degree in Military Business Sciences (MBW), War Studies (KW), or Military Systems & Technology (MS&T). Because all systems are mobile and the fire controllers and launchers transport them themselves, you will spend part of your training obtaining various driver's licenses.
