Introduction

As a legal officer in the Royal Netherlands Air Force, you will be trained as an officer and military legal counsel. Military law is a versatile field that includes elements of constitutional and administrative law, criminal law, and international law, among others. Does this combination appeal to you? What you will do

As a Legal Officer, you will provide advice on legal matters that a commander or organizational unit faces in carrying out their duties. You will primarily advise in the areas of international law, humanitarian law, the law of armed conflict, military criminal and disciplinary law, and military civil service law. Depending on the position you are assigned to, air and space law, contract law, constitutional and administrative law, or export compliance may also be relevant to your work. You will also occasionally participate in exercises both domestically and abroad. Like any military member, you must be prepared for the possibility of deployment.

Where you will work

After your training, you will be assigned to the legal department of one of the most versatile employers in the Netherlands. The Royal Netherlands Air Force has services and units both domestically and abroad. Your first position after training can be at various locations within the Royal Netherlands Air Force. You will be appointed as a military member of the Ministry of Defence. As a Legal Officer, you will receive an initial appointment of at least 4 years after completing the training at the KMA. The probationary period lasts for 6 months. A legal officer is appointed to the rank of captain. Furthermore, the Air Force also offers excellent secondary employment conditions. For example, you can make use of an attractive package of study facilities, which you can also benefit from outside the Air Force. The Air Force also offers good healthcare, comprehensive travel and expense allowances, and extensive sports facilities. But the best employment condition cannot be expressed in money, of course: the unique experience you can gain within the Royal Netherlands Air Force and the Ministry of Defence in general!

After your training, you will start in the role of Legal Officer, advising your commander on international law, humanitarian law, the law of armed conflict, military criminal and disciplinary law, and military civil service law. Throughout your career, you will hold various legal positions for approximately three years each. This allows you to hold positions in different units, and there are also positions at the Public Prosecution Service in Arnhem. Furthermore, you will complete the specialized technical training (VTO) 'on the job' and will undertake a specialization track in Military Law at the University of Amsterdam (UvA).
