As an Occupational Physician Officer with the Royal Netherlands Army, in addition to being an occupational physician, you are also active in the fields of general practitioner and public health physician. Within Defense, we want to offer every employee the best medical care. That is why we have an extensive medical service, including our own (dental) doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and pharmacists.

You have a university degree as a basic physician (WO Medicine) and have completed the specialization as an occupational physician. You are registered in the BIG register as a physician in occupational health and safety – occupational physician. Furthermore, you possess a high degree of independence.

This is what you will do

As an Occupational Physician Officer with the Royal Netherlands Army, you will provide integrated care. This means that you not only wear the hat of an occupational physician but also of a general practitioner and a public health physician. You will therefore look at every patient from each of these perspectives. You will work together in the medical care team with military general practitioners and general military physicians, where each person contributes their specific expertise. This broad integrated approach is characteristic of primary military healthcare.

This is where you will work

You are wherever our men and women are; at the barracks and in the field. You hold your consultations in a health center at the barracks. However, when necessary, as a military physician, you will also provide first aid from a mobile aid station and work together with other elements of the Army's medical units, but also, of course, with other Defense units, NATO partners, and possibly NGOs. The environment has a great influence on the care you can provide. During exercises and missions, you have fewer options than under normal circumstances. In emergencies, you usually cannot refer quickly and your team has direct care for the patient for a longer period. You will work in a health center at one of the barracks in the country. Like every soldier, you will also participate in exercises and deployments when necessary.

After appointment, you will first follow the shortened officer training for specialists of approximately 10 weeks at the Royal Military Academy in Breda, followed by parts of the training to become a General Military Physician at the Defense Medical Training and Education Center in Hollandsche Rading. The occupational physician has exemptions for parts of this training based on previously acquired competencies. During these periods, the occupational physician will be assigned to a health center.

The Royal Netherlands Army takes your placement preference into account, but may deviate from the initial placement preference for organizational reasons. The Royal Netherlands Army will inform you about your actual placement during the Vocational Technical Training.
