What you will do

At the Ministry of Defence, we want to offer every employee the best medical care. That is why we have an extensive Healthcare Organization, with the Central Military Hospital (CMH) taking care of secondary care. As an Officer Anesthesiologist Assistant, you are part of the operating team responsible for the smooth running of an operation. You will work in a small OR where communication lines are short. This OR primarily performs low- to complex procedures by all surgical specialties, with the exception of cardiothoracic surgery. As an anesthesiologist assistant, you will therefore contribute to a wide range of operations. Do you want to work on highly complex procedures? Then exchange with the UMC Utrecht is also possible.

In the OR at the CMH, the operating team provides high-quality surgical care, but this care can also be requested during operational deployment of the Armed Forces. During exercises and on missions, you can work in various locations. For example, in a field hospital or on board a naval vessel. You will always work with a multidisciplinary team. It is possible that you will work in a well-equipped hospital or in an improvised environment with very limited resources.

In addition to hard (technical) skills, it is important that you can handle patients well. You guide, explain, and reassure patients. In your role as Officer Anesthesiologist Assistant, you are someone the anesthesiologist, the OR team, and the patient can rely on. Every anesthesiologist assistant is deployed in the operating room as well as in the holding and recovery areas. Furthermore, you play an active role in your military professional group and broaden your professional network at meetings and symposia. You maintain your military basic skills and complete the fitness test annually.

Where you will work

The Ministry of Defence is responsible for the medical care of all military personnel. Military personnel can go to the barracks, airbase, or ship for a general practitioner or dentist. However, for a specialist visit or an operation, military personnel go to the Central Military Hospital in Utrecht, where you, as an anesthesiologist assistant, will work. At the CMH, the focus is on day treatments and short-term hospital stays. It is a small hospital that has most specialties in-house. There is a special atmosphere, especially because employees and patients are colleagues. Because the Ministry of Defence contributes to the hospital's financing, we can see patients quickly, and there is still plenty of time and attention for the patient and for each other. The CMH is located next to the UMC Utrecht and works closely with it. Together, for example, we have the Calamity Hospital, which is capable of receiving up to 200 patients within half an hour in the event of a disaster or calamity.

Before you start working, you will first follow the 10-week specialist training at the Royal Netherlands Naval College (KIM) in Den Helder. There is no specific Vocational Technical Training (VTO), but there are various courses you must complete before going on deployment.
