What you will do

At Defense, we want to offer every employee the best possible medical care. That is why we have an extensive Healthcare Organization, with the Central Military Hospital (CMH) responsible for secondary care. As an Officer Anesthesia Assistant, you are part of the operating team responsible for the smooth running of an operation. You will work in a small OR with short lines of communication. This OR primarily performs low- to complex procedures across all surgical specialties, except cardiothoracic surgery. As an anesthesia assistant, you will therefore contribute to a wide range of operations. Do you want to work on highly complex procedures? Then exchange with UMC Utrecht is also possible.

In the OR at the CMH, the operating team provides high-quality surgical care, but this care may also be requested during operational deployment of the Armed Forces. During exercises and on missions, you can work in various locations. For example, in a field hospital. You will always work with a multidisciplinary team. You might work in a well-equipped hospital or in an improvised environment with very limited resources.

In addition to hard (technical) skills, it is important that you can interact well with patients. You provide support, give explanations, and reassure patients. In your role as Officer Anesthesia Assistant, you are someone the anesthesiologist, the OR team, and the patient can rely on. Every anesthesia assistant is deployed in the operating room as well as in the pre-operative holding area and recovery. Furthermore, you play an active role in your military professional group and broaden your professional network at meetings and symposia. You will maintain your military basic skills and complete the fitness test annually.

This depends on, among other things, the results of the fitness test, psychological examination, medical examination, and security investigation, which are part of the application process. Once all these parts have been successfully completed, your start date will be discussed and confirmed.

Where you will work

Defense is responsible for the medical care of all military personnel. For general practitioners or dentists, military personnel can go to the barracks, airbase, or ship. However, for a visit to a specialist or an operation, military personnel go to the Central Military Hospital in Utrecht, where you will work as an anesthesia assistant. At the CMH, the focus is on day treatments and short-term admissions. It is a small hospital that has most specialties in-house. There is a special atmosphere, especially because employees and patients are colleagues. Because Defense contributes to the hospital's financing, we can see patients quickly, and there is still plenty of time and attention for the patient and for each other. The CMH is located next to UMC Utrecht and works closely with it. Together, for example, we have the Calamity Hospital, which is capable of receiving up to 200 patients within half an hour in the event of a disaster or calamity.

Before you start working, you will first complete the 10-week specialist training at the Royal Military Academy (KMA) in Breda. There is no specific Technical Skills Training (VTO), but there are various courses you must complete before you go on deployment.
