Job description
At Lockton, we are looking for a Meteorologist with a solid scientific background and analytical experience to join our regional research team. This position offers a unique opportunity to apply knowledge of meteorology, climatology, and data analysis to the design of innovative risk transfer and parametric insurance solutions in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Modality: Hybrid
Contract Type: Full-Time
1. About the Team
We are a dynamic team working at the intersection of science and insurance: catastrophic risk analytics applied to real operations, not theoretical exercises.
Our work is the technical support behind the insurance and reinsurance placements in the region, both in the traditional and non-traditional markets (parametric, alternative risk transfer, capital markets). The analysis produced by this team is what sustains the structure, pricing, and technical defense of each placement with clients, insurers, and reinsurers.
The range of perils is broad and changes with the portfolio: agriculture, wildfires, renewable energy, earthquake, hurricane, flood, and drought, among others. In practice, this means that a single year may include designing a rainfall index for a crop, seismic modeling of a sovereign portfolio, and wind risk analysis for a wind farm.
What this position offers:
- Direct exposure to high-profile regional projects, including sovereign and institutional clients in Latin America and the Caribbean.
- Real market contact: participation in meetings with insurers and reinsurers, not just internal desk work.
- Formal training in commercial catastrophic modeling and risk structuring — a scarce and high-demand skillset in the industry.
- A technical and collaborative team where independent judgment and scientific rigor carry weight in decisions.
- Work with tangible impact: the solutions we design determine how quickly financial resources arrive after a disaster.
2. Position Summary
We are seeking a meteorologist to join the research team that designs, structures, and validates parametric insurance solutions for clients in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The role is fundamentally technical and analytical: the person will work with meteorological and climatic data (reanalysis, satellite, stations, tropical cyclone catalogs) to design and test parametric triggers, quantify risk by peril (hurricane, flood, drought, excess rainfall), and translate these results into material presented to clients, insurers, and reinsurers.
It is an ideal position for someone with a solid scientific background who wants to apply meteorology to a financial and commercial context, with direct exposure to high-profile regional projects.
3. Main Responsibilities
- Meteorological and climatic data analysis: processing of reanalysis (ERA5 / ERA5-Land), satellite precipitation data (IMERG, CHIRPS), tropical cyclone catalogs (HURDAT2, IBTrACS), and national station records.
- Design and back-testing of parametric triggers: construction of indices, definition of thresholds, calculation of historical activation rates, and basis risk analysis.
- Execution of commercial catastrophic models: running and analyzing results on industry platforms (AIR/Verisk Touchstone, Moody's RMS RiskLink), including exposure preparation, scenario execution, and reading loss curves (EP, AAL, PML). No prior experience required: formal training will be provided.
- Statistics applied to risk: time series analysis, distribution fitting, extreme value theory, exceedance curves, and return periods.
- Automation: development and maintenance of reproducible routines in Python and/or R for data download, cleaning, and processing; code documentation.
- Active event monitoring: tracking ongoing storms and events, and preparing status reports for clients and the sales team.
- Production of technical material: reports, visualizations, maps, and presentations explaining complex results to non-technical audiences.
- Placement support: participation in meetings with clients, insurers, and reinsurers, presenting the technical logic behind proposed structures.
- Applied research: literature review, evaluation of new data sources and emerging methodologies relevant to the parametric business.
4. Essential Requirements
Education
- Master's degree or higher in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, Climatology, or a closely related discipline.
Experience
- 2 to 3 years of professional experience. Experience in insurance/reinsurance, engineering, catastrophic modeling, national meteorological services, or applied research in the subject area will be valued.
- Theses, internships, and research projects with a strong analytical component are considered valid.
Technical Skills
- Programming in Python and/or R, with demonstrable ability to manipulate and analyze meteorological datasets.
- Solid statistical fundamentals: probability distributions, time series, regression, and extreme event concepts.
- GIS proficiency (essential requirement): proven experience in QGIS, ArcGIS, or equivalent, including management of raster and vector data, coordinate systems and projections, spatial analysis, and production of presentable quality maps. Programmatic handling (geopandas, rasterio, sf, terra) is valued.
- Handling data in scientific formats (NetCDF, GRIB).
- Advanced Excel skills: pivot tables, nested formulas, lookups and references, management of large databases, charts, and construction of auditable calculation models. It is the standard exchange tool with clients and markets.
- Presentation creation: ability to build clear and visually professional presentations in PowerPoint, geared towards executive and commercial audiences.
Languages
- Fluent English (spoken and written) — non-negotiable requirement. Formally assessed during the process.
- Native or fluent Spanish.
Other
- Valid U.S. visa (or demonstrable eligibility to obtain one).
- Availability for frequent national and international travel.
5. Desirable Requirements
Not exclusionary; they add value to the evaluation.
- Experience with parametric insurance or risk transfer.
- Previous experience with commercial catastrophic models (AIR/Verisk Touchstone, Moody's RMS RiskLink, OASIS, or others). This is a significant plus, but not exclusionary: training will be provided.
- Knowledge of specific regional perils: Atlantic and Eastern Pacific tropical cyclones, ENSO, drought, fluvial and pluvial flooding.
- Experience with climate data APIs (Copernicus/CDS, NOAA, commercial providers).
- Version control (Git) and good reproducible code practices.
- Data visualization (Plotly, matplotlib, ggplot2) and automated report generation.
- Portuguese.
- Publications, presentations, or participation in scientific conferences.
6. Competencies and Profile
- High attention to detail. Errors in thresholds and data have direct contractual and financial consequences.
- Rigor and intellectual honesty: ability to point out limitations and uncertainties in one's own data and results.
- Communication: demonstrable skill in explaining technical content accessibly to commercial audiences.
- Autonomy and high motivation: ability to progress with limited supervision and manage multiple projects in parallel under commercial deadlines.
- Curiosity and willingness to learn a new domain (insurance and reinsurance structuring) from a scientific foundation.
- Collaborative work in a distributed regional team.
If you are passionate about applied meteorology, risk analysis, and want to develop a career in one of the most specialized areas of the insurance market, we invite you to apply.
