Job description
Do you want to explore, improve, and develop innovative applications based on the collaboration between intelligent systems and the user? Then we are looking for you!
As an R&D Engineer Human Machine Teaming (HMT), you will be involved in the entire chain of research into how intelligent and autonomous systems can support humans in complex task environments.
As an experienced professional, we expect you to be comfortable in various roles and move effortlessly between project management, proposal management, and research. This means you will not only initiate new projects but also develop the customer's needs and contribute substantively to projects where you monitor progress and proactively communicate with the client!
You will design the interaction between the user and advanced systems, develop proof-of-concepts and demonstrators, and/or test what works and what doesn't in experiments in our simulation and XR environments.
What will you do?
As an R&D Engineer Human Machine Teaming at NLR, you will explore innovative human-technology collaboration concepts for a variety of projects. Sometimes these are internal knowledge development projects or European research calls, and you also work for civil clients and defense.
You will collaborate with colleagues with diverse expertise, such as Human Factors specialists, UX designers, Software Developers, AI experts, and Education experts. You will utilize our AR/VR, spatial computing, and human-in-the-loop simulation environments.
A glimpse of your tasks:
You are familiar with the (im)possibilities of the latest AI technology, gather new knowledge about it, and devise how it can be used to support people in their daily work. From a technological perspective, you examine the interaction between humans and intelligent systems. How can AI or automation be designed to work well with the human operator?
Together with your colleagues, you conceive and design new collaboration concepts for different levels of autonomy and develop them in a test environment. You will guide the (co-)design process and software development and evaluate the final result in an operational environment or controlled experiment. Ultimately, you will publish the results in a scientific journal when possible.
You conceive and lead research projects commissioned by (external) stakeholders or for internal knowledge development projects.
What do you bring?
You are someone who thinks in terms of opportunities and is curious to contribute to solutions. With your creative mindset, you quickly master new techniques and know how to translate them into concrete results!
In addition:
You possess demonstrable Bachelor's/Master's level work and thinking ability. For example, you have a completed degree or PhD in Human-Computer Interaction, Design for Interaction, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, or a comparable study in which AI and/or Human Machine Interaction plays a significant role;
You have at least 8 years of relevant work experience, including at least 3 years of knowledge and experience in the field of AI or HIS and/or in relevant research projects;
You have experience leading design or research projects focused on advanced, autonomous, and/or intelligent systems in complex task environments;
You have knowledge of and experience with applying AI techniques and software development, such as practical experience with Python, NLP / LLM, and ML frameworks. Or you have experience with the development and implementation of UI/UX design for information-intensive systems and/or complex work environments;
You are willing to delve into (military) aviation operations;
You can express yourself excellently both verbally and in writing in both Dutch and English.
What do we offer you?
Working at NLR means working in a national and international high-tech environment. Collaboration and commitment are of paramount importance to us. By giving you freedom and your own responsibility, you are best able to achieve groundbreaking innovations. Do you want to develop yourself both professionally and personally? You can also do that at NLR as a learning organization, with an education budget, a mentor, internal coaches, and good contacts with vocational colleges, universities of applied sciences, and universities.
In addition to all this, we offer you:
The opportunity to contribute to complex and socially relevant issues;

8% holiday allowance and a fixed year-end bonus of 8%;
The costs for travel by public transport are fully reimbursed. Do you travel by your own transport? Then you will receive a mileage allowance for commuting.
A healthcare allowance through our collective health insurance with OHRA as additional support for your healthcare costs;
Additional paid parental leave;
The opportunity to develop yourself with training and courses that match your ambitions.
Your new work environment
