Sailor (Orientation Period)

Introductory text

Your choice for the Navy is fixed, but you don't know exactly which department you want to work in yet. Of course, you want to experience it yourself before making that decision. Fortunately, the Navy helps you with that!

What you will do

After your First Maritime Military Training (EMMV), an orientation period of approximately six weeks will start on board a navy ship. During this period, as a temporary crew member, you will discover the unique world of the Navy, both at sea and in international ports. On board, you will experience firsthand what it is like to work for the Technical Service, the Logistics Service, and the Operational Service. After this orientation period, you will state your preference for one or more of these directions, and your final choice will be determined in consultation with the Navy. You will then follow the vocational training, so you can start working as a Sailor in your chosen direction! We call these directions 'service branches' within the Navy.

Where you will work

After your application, you will be invited for the application and selection process. If you successfully complete this, your career in the Navy will begin with nine weeks of EMMV (basic training) in Den Helder. After completing this training, you will be placed on board a navy ship and during the orientation period of approximately six weeks, you will get acquainted with all aspects of life on board, both ashore and at sea. You will work with all service branches on board and can thus prepare yourself well for your final choice. Afterwards, in consultation with your supervisor from the Navy, you will make a choice and follow the vocational training that belongs to it.

Please note: your choices may sometimes be limited by the number of available training positions and your prior education. For some vacancies, you need a specific educational background; therefore, check the vacancies to see if you have it.

You must have a valid passport at the start of the training!

Maybe you are hesitating. We are not. We see not only who you are now but also who you can become. What you can't do today, you will learn tomorrow. With good training, coaching, and a team that stands behind you.

Depending on the vocational direction you choose, you will work as a sailor on one of our ships. After this, you can be promoted to corporal and will therefore also lead a group of colleagues. By acquiring knowledge, experience, and regular further training, you can advance to the rank of sergeant (non-commissioned officer), where you will lead a larger group of people in your field.
