Seaman Nautical Service

Introductory text

Do you want to contribute to peace and security from a naval ship? Do you want to work together with a close-knit team of colleagues? And are you steady on your (sea) legs? Then you will feel right at home as a Seaman Nautical Service in the Navy!

What you will do

As a Seaman Nautical Service in the Navy, you will be involved in various tasks on and around the ship. This includes steering and launching our RHIBs (fast rigid inflatable boats), resupplying at sea, towing the ship, and mooring and unmooring the ship. Such a large ship needs to be well maintained; you will also take care of that! You will be responsible for the maintenance of the deck, the RHIBs, the rigging, and the lower decks where you will reside.

To ensure the ship sails safely, you and your team will closely monitor the surroundings. You will do this using high-tech equipment, but also by looking out from the ship's bridge together with the bridge team.

Our close-knit team consists of several different services: the Operational Nautical Service, the Operational Communications Service, and the Operational Operations Service. Depending on the type of ship you will be sailing on, there are additional specific tasks; for example, as a Seaman Nautical Service on our Small Surface Units, you will work on the bridge more often than on our Large Surface Units.

PLUS POINTS OF THIS FUNCTION

• Salary: your gross base salary, supplemented by allowances and our favorable travel expenses, pension, and health insurance scheme, will result in a pleasant net surprise.
• Work atmosphere: nowhere will you be part of such a close-knit team of colleagues as in the Defense Forces.
• Growth opportunities: In addition to being an employer, the Defense Forces is also a large training institute where you can follow courses to grow personally and professionally.

Where you will work

You will primarily work on deck and on the bridge of our naval ships that sail the world! But before you step on board, you will first complete a tough training program. This training lasts approximately one year and consists of eight weeks of Maritime Military Training, which lays the foundation for every sailor. After that, you will have thirteen weeks of First Professional Training, where you will attend classes on all the seamanship tasks we perform. Subsequently, you will undertake an eight-month internship on board a naval ship.
