Are you interested in working in the restaurant area of a naval ship as a steward, perhaps later in the kitchen as a cook, or as a purser? Do you have affinity with or knowledge of hospitality work? Then we are looking for you!

Do you (preferably) have an MBO diploma from a Hotel and Catering School and/or experience in serving or as a cook? And would you like to work aboard a naval ship that sails around the world? Then apply for the position of Seaman Catering. You will start with an education to become a soldier.

What you will do

As a Seaman Catering, you are responsible for the buffet in the restaurant, keeping the restaurant clean, and assisting in the kitchen. As a cook, you will prepare meals (mise-en-place) and assist with setting up food components. You will also perform general duties (such as cleaning) within the galley and bakery. Are you good at calculations and planning? Then you can advance to the position of purser.
In addition to your technical tasks on board, you are of course also a soldier and have duties associated with that. As a Seaman Catering, you are part of the Medical Action Service (MAD) and assist the nurse on board. This means that during exercises and emergencies, you will help care for the wounded, but you will also have to lift stretchers with wounded.

So, quite a lot is expected of you, but that's exactly what you want. You're not looking for a boring job, but rather a challenging job with action and adventure, and being away from home is not a problem for you.

Where you will work

You will work on board a naval ship. You may be away from home for several months at a time, sometimes 6 or 7 months a year, but that is exceptional.

Before you start working, you will follow several training courses at the naval base in Den Helder and Bruges in Belgium. These include: the First Military and Maritime Training (EMMV, duration approx. 8 weeks), the Emergency Training (NBCD, duration 3 weeks) supplemented with practical training courses in your field. This depends on the knowledge and skills you bring and what is needed for the function on the ship.
