Seaman Catering (lateral entry)

Introductory text

Are you interested in working on board a navy ship in the restaurant section as a head waiter, perhaps later in the kitchen as a cook, or as a purser? Do you have affinity with or knowledge of hospitality work? Then we are looking for you!

Do you (preferably) have a vocational diploma in Hospitality School and/or experience in serving or as a cook? And would you like to work on board a navy ship that sails around the world? Then apply for the position of Seaman Catering. You will start with training to become a military member.

What you will do

As a Seaman Catering, you are responsible for the buffet in the restaurant, keeping the restaurant clean, and assisting in the kitchen. As a cook, you prepare meals (mise-en-place) and assist in setting up food components. You also perform general duties (such as cleaning) within the galley and bakery. Are you good at calculating and planning? Then you can advance to the role of purser.
In addition to your technical tasks on board, you are of course also a military member and have duties that come with that. As a Seaman Catering, you are part of the Medical Action Team (MAD) and assist the nurse on board. This means that during exercises and emergencies, you help care for the injured, but also that you have to lift stretchers with injured people.

A lot is expected of you, but that is precisely what you want. You are not looking for a boring job, but rather a challenging job with action and adventure, and being away from home is not a problem for you.

Where you will work

You will work on board a navy ship. You may be away from home for several months, sometimes 6 or 7 months a year, but that is exceptional.

Before you start working, you will follow several training courses at the naval base in Den Helder and Bruges in Belgium. These consist of: the Initial Military and Maritime Training (EMMV, duration approx. 8 weeks), the Emergency Training (NBCD, duration 3 weeks), supplemented with practical training in your field. This depends on the knowledge and skills you bring and what is needed for the function on the ship.
