Masterarbeit / Master Thesis: Automated Parameterization of Controllers for Sollwertverfolgung in Model Predictive Control of Energy Systems

Part Time Entry Level

Job description

You want to write your master's thesis at the interface of control engineering, energy technology, and intelligent automation? At etalytics, you will work on practical solutions for industrial energy systems and contribute directly to the efficiency and sustainability of energy processes.

Model predictive control (MPC) plays a central role. In this master's thesis, you will deal with the automated parameterization of underlying controllers that precisely and stably follow the Sollwerte of an MPC - a highly relevant topic for modern energy systems.

Aufgaben

Model predictive control (MPC) is widely used in modern automation technology, as it enables optimal control by taking into account system dynamics and side conditions. In many applications, the Sollwerte for underlying controllers are specified by the MPC. The challenge lies in parameterizing these underlying controllers so that they can precisely and dynamically follow the specified Sollwerte without generating instabilities or excessive control deviations. Automated parameterization can significantly contribute to efficiency gains and robustness.

The goal of this work is to develop an automated approach for parameterizing controllers (e.g., PID controllers) that follow the Sollwerte of a model predictive control. It should be investigated how the choice of parameters affects the control quality and how an algorithm can be designed to automatically adjust these parameters. The solution should be both theoretically grounded and practically validated.

  • Analyze existing methods for parameterizing controllers in model predictive control environments
  • Examine automated approaches, such as optimization procedures or KI-based methods
  • Design an algorithm for automatically parameterizing a controller (e.g., PID) for a selected energy system
  • Perform simulations to evaluate the control quality, stability, and dynamics of the developed method
  • Compare your approach with manual parameterization and possibly existing automated methods
  • Summarize the results in a structured manner and draw conclusions for practical application

Qualifikation

  • Ongoing master's studies in the field of mechanical engineering, control engineering, automation technology, energy technology, electrical engineering, mechatronics, or a comparable program
  • Experience working with simulation and development environments like MATLAB/Simulink or similar tools
  • Analytical thinking and interest in algorithmic and data-driven approaches
  • Very good German language skills and good English language skills in writing and speaking

Benefits

  • Purposeful work: Support industrial companies in becoming more efficient and sustainable
  • Flexibility: Hybrid working with home office possibilities (two days per week) and flexible working hours
  • Team spirit: A supportive, collegiate environment with plenty of room for exchange and cooperation
  • Community: Regular team events and joint activities
  • Excellent development opportunities and high autonomy in a growing team

Our office is located in Darmstadt near Frankfurt am Main, conveniently located with good connections to public transportation, the autobahn, and the airport. Join a highly motivated, international team!
