Introduction

As a Marine, you are always prepared to go the extra mile. Wherever in the world, you operate as one team in the most diverse circumstances. As a Marine Communications Specialist (COMMSPEC), you are responsible for all digital and radio connections within your team so that communication during missions always runs smoothly.

After you have applied, you will be invited for the Marine Fitness Test. If you pass that, you will subsequently receive an invitation for the introductory days.

What you will do

As a Marine COMMSPEC, you are an important link within every mission. You work with modern communication and IT systems that are essential for the safety and effectiveness of your unit. You ensure the establishment and maintenance of communication links that are important for your unit, for example via radio or satellite. From requesting air support to medical evacuations – you ensure that every message arrives. As a Marine, you participate in international peace operations of NATO and the United Nations. You can be deployed anywhere in the world within 48 hours. In addition, you contribute to the defense of the Kingdom, including on Curaçao, Aruba, and Sint Maarten. It is important that you are always ready for deployment. So, physically and mentally, you must be prepared for anything. That is why you train intensively, both physically and mentally, in the most diverse circumstances: from the jungle to the polar regions. In short: as a Marine, you expand your world – literally and figuratively.

Where you will work

The motto of the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps is 'Qua Patet Orbis' – "as wide as the world stretches". You can be deployed anywhere in the world for peace operations or missions. You are often far from home during training as well: for example, during mountain, winter, or jungle training. To become a Marine COMMSPEC, you first follow the training in Rotterdam. The Marine training consists of a basic part – the Elementary Military Training Marines (EMV MARNS) – and a vocational part – the First Vocational Training Marine General (EVO MARNALG). During this intensive period, you alternate training weeks at the barracks with field exercises and an amphibious exercise on Texel. You will develop strength, discipline, and perseverance – and learn to operate under any circumstance, as part of a close-knit team. After successful completion, you start the vocational training to become a Communications Specialist (COMMSPEC). Afterwards, you will work within the Signals service, at one of the operational units in the Netherlands or on the Caribbean islands.

As a Marine Signals Service ICT, you are responsible within your group for communication connections during exercises and missions. A next step is the rank of Corporal Signals Service ICT. You will lead the 'signaller' marines within your unit. As a Sergeant in the Signals Service, you will have a leadership role within your unit.
