Job description
Introduction
Can you quickly grasp complex issues and do you want to help the Royal Netherlands Navy correctly utilize its powers and capabilities to fulfill its task for the Netherlands? Do you clearly explain at different levels what is legally possible and what is not? Are you as comfortable liaising with colleagues without a legal background as you are with lawyers and other (local) authorities? Then we are looking for you!
What you will do
As an officer of law in the Royal Netherlands Navy, you will provide legal advice to commanders and department heads. You will assist them with everything they encounter in their work, so they can perform their tasks properly and lawfully. As a military lawyer, you have a broad foundation and advise on various fields. In this role, you will start within the domain of public and administrative law, with a focus on environmental law. This is a new field within the Royal Netherlands Navy. Your knowledge and experience will help to further build and strengthen this area within the organization. Therefore, we are looking for someone with extensive experience in public and administrative law and/or environmental law, who actively wants to use this expertise for Defense.
The military lawyer advises on international law, humanitarian law, law of armed conflict, human rights, military criminal and disciplinary law, and military civil service law. Increasingly, there is also more attention for environmental law, as well as specialisms such as state of emergency law/crisis legislation and AI, cyber, and privacy.
Occasionally, as a military member, you will participate in exercises at home and abroad, both at sea and on land. Like any military member, you must also consider, as a lawyer, that you may be deployed abroad.
The position you are initially applying for is versatile and is characterized by a variety of cases, mainly in the area of regulatory review, administrative agreements, contract law, complaint law, and advice on matters such as ammunition management, hazardous materials, and environmental law. The role also requires deepening and further development in areas such as state of emergency law and crisis legislation. Because you will constantly encounter new issues, you will be continuously challenged and a high degree of independence is expected. This independence means that you are constantly prioritizing, especially since the role also requires considerable flexibility. In addition to these activities, you will also participate in the ongoing training and exercise program in operational law to enable you, as a military lawyer, to advise a commander in operational circumstances.
PLUS POINTS OF THIS FUNCTION
- Salary: your gross base salary, through allowances and our favorable travel expenses, pension, and health insurance schemes, will result in a pleasant net surprise.
- Work atmosphere: nowhere else will you be part of such a close-knit team of colleagues as in Defense.
- Career development opportunities: besides being an employer, Defense is also a large training institute where you can follow (paid) training to grow personally and professionally.
- Challenge: You have a lot of responsibility and lead a small cluster within the Legal Affairs department: no day is the same!
Do you want to use your legal knowledge in a unique military work environment? Then this is your chance.
Where you will work
You will be working within the Legal Affairs department of the Royal Netherlands Navy. Here you will be part of a team of 14 (military) lawyers. The entire legal service group of the Royal Netherlands Navy consists of approximately 40 military lawyers. Together you will discuss complex issues and share knowledge and experience. Additionally, you will be part of a broad defense network of approximately 200 lawyers, allowing you to continuously develop your expertise.
You will largely support various units and departments of the Royal Netherlands Navy and therefore will not be sitting statically behind a desk, but will also actively visit units and departments.
Before you start, you will first complete a short 13-week officer training program to get to know the Navy organization well and to discover what it means to be a military member. Like every military member, you will change positions every 3 years. A unique opportunity to work in multiple legal fields and in all sorts of interesting locations.
YOUR CAREER
• After your training, you will start in your role as a military lawyer in the field of public and administrative law, with a focus on environmental law. You will fulfill this position for at least four years.
• Like every military member, you will change positions approximately every three years, in consultation with HR and the senior specialist of the legal service group. In your case, the emphasis will primarily be on various legal functions within Defense.
