Job description
Do you want to build the data foundation for tomorrow's Customer Services organization?
As Manager Customer Data Engineering, you will develop an experienced engineering team into a strategic Data Product Team.
You will bring together data, technology, and business, ensuring reliable, traceable, and AI-ready data products.
With your leadership, you will directly impact decision-making, customer service, and the further digital development of Athora.
What you should know about us?
We are Athora Netherlands, an insurance company with the well-known brands Zwitserleven and Reaal. We are primarily involved with pensions and life insurance in the Dutch market. We do this as part of a European group with branches in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, and Italy. We are a strong company with over one million customers, and we aim to grow into one of the key players in the rapidly changing pension market in the coming years. That's why we are looking for people who are not afraid of change, who know how to get things done, who have the ambition to achieve results, and who therefore get the best out of themselves and their team. Smarter together, we call that.
What will you do?
The Manager Data Customer Engineering reports to the Director Change & IT Customer Services and leads a team of 10 data engineers and DevOps engineers. The team is responsible for reliable, traceable, and usable data for internal business operations and steering, operational decision-making, external accountability reports, and future AI applications within the Customer Services and Commerce domain. The Manager Data Engineering is responsible for the further development of the current operational data and reporting team into a strategic Data Product Team. The role strengthens the data engineering capability within Customer Services by realizing reliable, traceable, and AI-ready data products for operational steering, decision-making, external accountability, and future data and AI applications. The manager ensures that data forms a reliable representation of business processes and portals, that APIs form a robust and reliable bridge between applications, and that data delivery takes place through Agile working methods, scalable data engineering, controlled DevOps processes, and structural data quality assurance.
Key responsibilities:
Developing the Data Engineering team into a strategic Data Product Team with end-to-end ownership for reliable and valuable data products;
Translating the Athora data strategy within Customer Services, including increasing data management maturity and ensuring data lineage and traceability. This also includes functional steering of DQ processes, and functional steering towards data stewards to shape the measurement and improvements in data quality;
Delivering reliable, traceable, usable, and AI-ready data for internal steering, operational decision-making, external accountability, and future AI applications;
Ensuring data quality and a consistent data representation of business processes, portals, customer interactions, and operational chains within Customer Services.
What do we ask of you?
University degree level of working and thinking, preferably in computer science, data engineering, data science, information management, business administration, or a similar field;
10-15 years of experience with data engineering, IT delivery, DevOps, application development, data platforms, or digital transformation, preferably in financial services;
Extensive experience in managing data engineers, DevOps engineers, IT engineering professionals, and/or multidisciplinary data delivery teams;
Experience in realizing data products, reporting chains, data integrations, operational steering information, and external accountability reports;
Strong knowledge of data engineering, data modeling, data visualization, data pipelines, metadata, lineage, data quality, DevOps, CI/CD, monitoring, cloud, APIs, APIM, security-by-design, and manageability;
Experience with .NET applications, integration modernization, ESB services, API management, message traffic, data foundations, and personal or customer administration;
Experience in translating data strategy, target architecture, and business priorities into concrete data roadmaps, technical choices, and implementation plans;
Knowledge of AI-ready data, responsible data usage, data governance, automation, and the application of data foundations for future AI applications;
Experience with stakeholder management towards business, reporting, IT, architecture, data & AI, security, risk, compliance, suppliers, and senior management;
Knowledge of laws and regulations, IT risk, privacy, security, data quality, DORA, EU AI Act, and compliance requirements within a regulated environment;
Experience with SAFe Agile standards and Agile data delivery;
Excellent command of the Dutch and English languages, both written and spoken.
We believe that our people make the difference. Through the knowledge and experience they bring, but also through who they are. In addition to the four Athora core competencies (courage, customer focus, collaboration, and delivering results), these are the four most important competencies for the Manager:
Data Engineering: Data product leadership: develops a vision for reliable, traceable, and AI-ready data products that create value for business, reporting, compliance, and future AI applications.
Execution power: translates data strategy, architecture, and business needs into roadmaps, data products, and predictable Agile delivery.
Engineering mindset: fosters craftsmanship, quality, ownership, DevOps, automation, manageability, and continuous improvement within data engineering.
Data quality and control mindset: ensures that data is demonstrably reliable, traceable, controlled, and suitable for decision-making, reporting, and accountability. Collaboration with business, pension experts, architecture, data & AI, security, platform teams, and suppliers, including contract ownership, contract and supplier management for the suppliers of relevant applications and solutions.
What do we offer you?
You will get approximately 900 colleagues who all believe they work for a special company. You will get the opportunity to make an important contribution to the socially relevant theme of pensions. We ensure that your pension is well arranged, so you can enjoy your old age without worries.
You will have the chance to make a real difference when it comes to sustainability, as we have been setting the tone for years in our business operations and our investments. Of course, you will receive a (flexible) workplace at our office in Amsterdam, which ranks among the top 7% in the world, really.
