Management Accountant

The Company
Our client is a reputable, large-scale New Zealand business operating in the industrial sector, providing comprehensive solutions across its value chain. With nationwide operations and a significant presence in the North Island, the company has continued to grow through strategic acquisitions and innovation. As part of its expansion, the company is seeking a highly motivated Management Accountant to take ownership of their utilities business unit with revenue of circa $70-$80M annually. They provide services to councils, as well as other large scale and reputable businesses. The company has key offices in both Auckland and Whakatane, so the role could be based at either of these locations. If you are based in Auckland, some travel to Whakatane will be required on an ad hoc basis.
The Role
This role will report to the Financial Controller (Commercial) who oversees operational success across the Group. The Management Accountant will play a pivotal role in overseeing financial operations, driving business performance, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards. Some of your key responsibilities include:
- Business Partnering: Collaborate with operational teams to monitor, enhance, and support performance and decision-making.
- Inventory & Work in Progress (WIP) Management: Oversee inventory systems, manage price variations, and review aged WIP to ensure accuracy and timeliness in financial reporting.
- Financial Reporting & Analysis: Conduct gross margin and variance analysis, prepare adjustments and accruals, and deliver accurate month-end results. Include commentary on variances for management reporting.
- Revenue Recognition: Ensure compliance with IFRS 15 by completing precise calculations for revenue recognition from contracts.
- Financial Processes: Manage monthly fixed assets (including leased assets), complete balance sheet reconciliations, and forecast costs to complete for projects. Facilitate monthly, quarterly, and annual profit & loss, balance sheet, and cash flow forecasts.
- Budgeting & Forecasting: Coordinate the annual budgeting process, upload budgets into financial systems (Pronto and NAV), and provide regular financial forecasts.
- System Optimization: Promote the use of Pronto and NAV across the business, including staff training and system testing, while identifying and implementing system improvement opportunities.
- Compliance & Control: Ensure effective internal controls are in place, maintain compliance with audit and statutory requirements, and implement recommendations from internal and external audits.
- Board Reporting & Audits: Assist with the production of management reports for Board review and support the external audit of year-end financial statements.
Your Profile
To be considered for this role, you will possess the following attributes:
- Proven management accounting experience
- Ideally some understanding of WIP and/or projecting accounting principles
- An ability to partner with operational business units to drive performance
- Strong ability to use excel, as well as experience with larger ERP systems, ideally NAV
- Experience working within a complex environment with multiple P&L's
- An ability to work independently
