Lead Engineer (m/f/d) - B2B SaaS & Industry Platform
Job description
At TOOLPLACE, you digitize the offer and procurement processes in the plastics injection molding and toolmaking industry. Our B2B platform connects OEMs, Tier 1/Tier 2 suppliers, injection molders, and toolmakers, making RFQ processes more transparent and efficient.
As a Lead Engineer (Lead Developer), you will take on technical responsibility for central components of our platform, provide technical leadership to our development team in Leipzig, and ensure that requirements are translated into robust software. AI is an important component both in the product itself and in the development process: you will help to integrate AI meaningfully and use it productively.
Tasks
- You will technically drive the further development of our B2B SaaS platform – from conception through implementation and code reviews to stable operation.
- You will work hands-on in the code, primarily in the backend (.NET, Python) and frontend (React), and take on architectural supervision for selected areas.
- You will provide technical leadership to the development team, assisting with prioritization, technical solution selection, pair programming, and code quality.
- You will work closely with management and the current CTO to realistically estimate technical roadmaps, effort, and risks.
- You will establish and improve development processes such as code reviews, testing, CI/CD, and documentation, so that the team can work efficiently and reliably.
- You will use AI tools in the development process (e.g., for code generation, tests, refactoring) and help to integrate them meaningfully into the workflow.
- You will contribute to the implementation of AI functionalities in the product (e.g., evaluation of technical data, automation of work steps, user support through intelligent functions).
- You will assist in coordinating offshore or nearshore teams and ensure clear interfaces and clean handovers.
- You will contribute to internal IT topics (e.g., developer tooling, access rights, basic security measures) and collaborate with external partners where necessary.
Qualifications
-
You have several years of experience in developing customer-oriented software, ideally in a B2B SaaS or platform environment – not in pure embedded or project software without ongoing product operation.
-
You have accompanied and actively further developed at least one product from the early development phase beyond go-live into ongoing operation.
-
You know B2B environments from your own experience and have worked with corporate clients – ideally in an industrial context (e.g., manufacturing, mechanical engineering, automotive).
-
You enjoy working intensively with code yourself and feel confident in one or more of the following stacks:
-
Backend: .NET and/or Python
-
Frontend: React
-
You have experience in the technical leadership of other developers (e.g., as a lead developer, senior with mentoring responsibility, or project lead) and take responsibility for quality and technical decisions.
-
You have already used AI in software projects – either in the product (e.g., using LLMs or other AI components) or in the development process (e.g., code assistants, automated tests, analysis tools) – and can assess where AI truly adds value.
-
Experience with Machine Learning (e.g., with common ML frameworks or building ML pipelines) is a plus, but not a must.
-
You bring a solid foundation in backend architectures and cloud environments, and think about stability, maintainability, and operation in your decisions.
-
You work in a structured manner, make decisions comprehensibly, and can explain technical matters clearly – internally and to non-technical people.
-
You are willing to work in Leipzig (hybrid work possible) and want to provide technical leadership to a small, high-performing engineering team there.
-
Very good German and good English, written and spoken, complete your profile.
Benefits
- A central technical role in a B2B SaaS product with concrete use cases in the plastics injection molding and toolmaking industry.
- Direct influence on architecture, code, and technical decisions – combined with the opportunity to provide technical leadership.
- Close collaboration with management and an orderly handover from the current CTO, who actively supports the transition.
- The chance to gradually take on more responsibility from a Lead Engineer role (e.g., towards Head of Engineering / CTO), if the collaboration is a good fit for both sides.
- Short decision-making processes, direct customer interaction, and an environment focused on technically sound, pragmatic, and AI-supported solutions.
- A hybrid work model with a focus on presence in Leipzig and flexible working hours within the framework of shared responsibility.
Does this role sound like a good fit for you?
Then send us your CV – preferably with a brief overview of your previous products, used tech stacks (.NET, React, Python), and roles.
We look forward to your application.
