Job Summary
Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Lead 310T Mechanic, is responsible for leading all aspects of vehicle and equipment maintenance within the company’s fleet. This hands-on role involves managing the day-to-day work of the mechanical team, ensuring all repairs and inspections meet regulatory standards and company policies, and coordinating closely with the Fleet Coordinator to maintain fleet efficiency and safety. They will be accountable for upholding preventive maintenance schedules, organizing annual inspections and safety certifications, managing parts ordering, and ensuring accurate repair documentation. This role plays a vital part in keeping the company’s fleet operational, compliant, and reliable.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and delegate tasks to mechanics; provide technical guidance and quality assurance on all repairs.
- Oversee daily repair work to ensure compliance with internal standards and safety protocols.
- Review daily work sheets from all mechanics before submission to the Fleet Coordinator.
- Act as the primary point of contact for escalated repair issues or diagnostics.
- Coordinate repair schedules and workload distribution with the Fleet Coordinator.
- Ensure all maintenance and repair work aligns with the company's Preventive Maintenance Program.
- Review and verify maintenance records maintained by the Fleet Coordinator.
- Schedule and manage annual inspections of all equipment in accordance with company policy.
- Conduct and document yearly safety inspections using the Drive On program and ensure all Drive On compliance requirements are current.
- Order required parts for repairs and assign appropriate purchase orders (POs).
- Monitor parts inventory and anticipate needs for upcoming projects or seasonal maintenance.
- Source and coordinate third-party repairs when specialized services are required or when capacity limits are reached.
- Maintain a clean and safe working environment within the shop and yard.
- Assist in training junior mechanics or apprentices as required.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned by management to support operational readiness.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a mechanic, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead role.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of a recognized Heavy Duty Equipment Technician or Automotive Service Technician program.
- Valid Ontario 310T Certificate of Qualification is required (310S may be considered)
- Valid driver’s license (DZ or higher preferred) with clean driving record.
- Extensive hands-on experience with heavy trucks, trailers, off-road construction equipment, and small tools.
- Demonstrated knowledge of preventive maintenance programs, diagnostics, and repair procedures.
- Strong understanding of fleet management systems and maintenance recordkeeping.
- Proficient with diagnostic software and modern mechanical/electrical repair techniques.
- Skilled in reading and interpreting maintenance manuals, wiring diagrams, and service bulletins.
- Experience with Drive On (or similar safety compliance platforms) is considered an asset.
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to supervise and mentor a team.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities.
- Clear and professional communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other departments, including Fleet and Operations.
