Job description
1 The word of the LORD that came to Joel son of Pethuel.
2 Hear this, you elders; listen, all you inhabitants of the land! Has anything like this ever happened in your days or in the days of your ancestors?
3 Tell it to your children, and let your children tell their children; let their children tell the next generation.
4 What the locust swarm has left, the great locusts have eaten; what the great locusts have left, the young locusts have eaten; what the young locusts have left, other locusts have eaten.
5 Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! Wail, all you who drink wine, because it has been taken from you.
6 A people has invaded my land, powerful and without number; their teeth are the teeth of a lion, and they have the fangs of a lioness.
7 They have laid waste my vines and destroyed my fig trees. They have stripped their bark and left it white; their branches have been broken off.
8 Mourn like a virgin dressed in sackcloth for the husband of her youth.
9 The grain offering and the drink offering are cut off from the house of the LORD. The priests are in mourning, servants of the LORD.
10 The fields are ruined, the ground is dried up; the grain is destroyed, the new wine has failed, the olive oil runs out.
11 Despair, you farmers, wail, you vine growers, because of the wheat and the barley, for the harvest of the fields has been destroyed.
12 The vine has dried up and the fig tree has withered; the pomegranate, the palm, the apple tree—all the trees of the field—are withered. Joy has withered away from the human race.
13 Put on sackcloth and lament, you priests; wail, you who serve the altar. Come and spend the night in sackcloth, you servants of my God; for the grain offering and the drink offering are withheld from the house of your God.
14 Declare a holy fast, call a sacred assembly. Gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD.
15 Alas for the day! For the day of the LORD is near, coming with the force of a destructive storm.
16 Has not the food been destroyed before our eyes, and with it joy and gladness from the house of our God?
17 The seeds have shriveled under the clods; the storehouses are in ruins, the granaries have been broken down, because the grain has failed.
18 How the animals groan! The herds of cattle wander in despair because there is no pasture for them; even the flocks of sheep are left to die.
19 To you, LORD, I call, for fire has consumed the meadows in the desert and flames have scorched the trees of the field.
20 Even the wild animals cry out to you, for the streams have dried up and fire has consumed the meadows in the desert.
