Java Tech Lead (m/w/d) Mobility Startup

We develop and operate an end-to-end platform for car-sharing and vehicle rental, which is currently in use at customers in Germany, Austria, and Spain.

The platform is fully white-label-capable and includes mobile apps, web applications, back-office tools, as well as integrations with telematics hardware, payment service providers, and KYC providers – all from a single, modular codebase.

The backend is based on Java 17 / Jakarta EE 10 (Payara), the frontend on React / React Native. We are in a strategic growth phase and are now looking for an experienced technical leadership role that will shape the next step.

The Role

As Tech Lead, you will take on a central bridging function between Engineering and company management. You will work closely with the CTO, relieve him operationally, and ensure that the platform keeps pace with the growth of the company – technically as well as organizationally.

This position is for someone who can dive deep into code as well as keep an eye on the bigger picture. You have no fear of a grown system with history – you see it as an opportunity.

Aufgaben

Technische Führung & Architektur

• Further development and maintenance of the modular Java/Jakarta EE platform, including responsibility for architectural decisions

• Implementation of identified infrastructure improvements: IaC (Terraform / CloudFormation), Multi-Region Setup, DR Plan

• Responsibility for implementing open security measures

• Driving the migration from binary data from MongoDB to S3 and other technical debt projects

• Evaluation and further development of CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI) and test coverage

Prozesse & Teamorganisation

• Establishing formal code review processes and consistent planning cycles in the development team

• Close cooperation with the CTO to gradually hand over engineering and operational responsibility

• Supporting the setup of a product management process in line with customer requirements

• Mentoring junior frontend developers and supporting senior engineers

Betrieb & Qualität

• Co-responsibility for monitoring, alerting, and incident response (AWS CloudWatch, Sentry, Crashlytics)

• Optimizing the Sentry configuration to reduce noise and improve observability

• Automating dependency vulnerability scanning in the CI pipeline

• Accompanying customer projects on a technical level – from onboarding to error correction

Qualifikation

Must-have

• Several years of experience in backend development with Java (JakartaEE / JavaEE / Spring) in productive systems
* Outstanding experience with Test-Driven Development (TDD) as well as a high quality awareness and interest in software craftsmanship.

• Proven experience as Tech Lead or Senior Engineer with team responsibility

• Solid understanding of cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS (EC2, ECS, CloudWatch, S3)

• Experience with MongoDB or similar NoSQL databases in productive operation

• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI, GitHub Actions o. Ä.) and modern deployment practices

• Hands-on mentality: You can immediately deliver added value without requiring months of onboarding time

Nice-to-have

• Knowledge in Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform or CloudFormation)

• Experience with React and/or React Native in the frontend

• Understanding of mobility, car-sharing, or rental domains

• Experience in regulated environments or with GDPR compliance projects

• Knowledge in telematics hardware integration or IoT-related systems

• Driving license class B
