Nature of the work The main and usual role of the employee in this job classification is to interpret for deaf or hard-of-hearing students the spoken message of people with whom the student must communicate during classes and other educational activities.
Some characteristic assignments
  • The employee in this job classification interprets simultaneously and integrally the spoken message of teachers or educators and other people, during classes and other activities related to the educational life of deaf or hard-of-hearing students, using different modes of communication. Additionally, they interpret simultaneously and integrally the student's message for these same people.
  • They assist students to facilitate their learning and social integration.
  • They may be called, in the case where the student, in addition to his or her auditory handicap, presents difficulties of adaptation or learning, to provide appropriate assistance.
  • They may be called to participate in various meetings to agree on signs for notions that have not yet been interpreted or to develop an intervention plan to transmit their observations regarding behavior, adaptation difficulties, and learning difficulties of one or more students and apply the measures retained within the limits of their function
Required qualifications
Education and experience
  • Be holder of a college diploma in an appropriate technique for this job classification or be holder of a degree or certificate recognized by the competent authority, and have at least two (2) years of experience in interpretation.
Other requirements
  • Depending on the case, know one or more appropriate communication modes: French Sign Language, Spoken Language Complemented (L.P.C.), Quebec Sign Language (L.S.Q.), American Sign Language (A.S.L.), Pidgin or
