Job description

R&D Engineer Test Equipment Design (H/F)

About Our Client

Our client is a very small company (TPE) based north of Lyon, specializing in underground energies: oil, gas, geothermal energy, and CO2 storage. Its activity is entirely based on R&D: testing on geomaterials, geomechanics, and development of testing equipment for international clients.

Its multidisciplinary and multicultural team develops innovative technological solutions for efficiency, environmental protection, and cost control. The company is ISO 9001 certified and all its activities comply with its QHSE approach.

The Position

To accelerate its development projects, our client is recruiting an R&D Engineer in test equipment design. You will be responsible for the design, development, and validation of high-temperature and high-pressure test cells, a strategic subject for the company and its clients.

Reporting to the operations management, you will work in close collaboration with the team that currently designs the equipment and files the company's patents.

Indicative time allocation: approximately 70 to 80% design and development, 20 to 30% laboratory (assembly and validation of your equipment).

In a human-sized structure, you will follow your developments from design to testing, before their transfer to the production team.

Your Missions

Design and development of testing equipment

  • Design new test cells and devices, particularly for high-temperature and high-pressure conditions.
  • Solve associated technical problems: instrumentation and sensors, sealing, resistance to temperature and pressure.
  • Consult suppliers and subcontractors, and monitor the manufacturing of parts.
  • Improve existing equipment, especially their ergonomics and ease of use in production.

Development and validation

  • Assemble the developed equipment and perform validation tests in the laboratory.
  • Interpret experimental results and verify their consistency.
  • Transfer validated equipment to the production team and assist them in its adoption.

Documentation and intellectual property

  • Write technical documentation, reports, and summaries, and present them, in both French and English.
  • Participate in technical monitoring and the writing of protection documents (patents, Soleau envelopes).

Laboratory life

  • Understand the tests performed in the laboratory to design equipment adapted to their needs.
  • Contribute to laboratory activities and continuous improvement, in compliance with the ISO 9001 quality approach.

Requirements

Technical skills

  • Mechanical design and proficiency in CAD software.
  • Instrumentation, sensors, and measurement techniques.
  • Understanding of physical and physicochemical quantities.
  • Technical writing and professional English, both spoken and written.

Soft skills

  • Autonomy and ability to take ownership of a subject from start to finish.
  • Rigor, especially in testing phases.
  • Versatility and a hands-on approach: you enjoy designing as much as testing your equipment yourself.
  • Proactive communication, particularly for reporting and resolving difficulties encountered.
  • Desire to learn and invest in a small structure.

Education and experience

  • Engineering degree or equivalent Bac +5 in mechanical engineering, design, instrumentation, or physical measurements.
  • Approximately 5 years of experience in equipment design, in an engineering department, or in R&D. More junior profiles with a significant first experience in design will be considered.
  • Experience with equipment subjected to temperature or pressure constraints is a real plus.

Benefits

You will join a human-sized company where every development counts: your equipment will be directly used for R&D projects carried out for international clients. You will work within a dynamic and multicultural team, on demanding technical subjects serving underground energies and the energy transition.
