Job description

Design & Instrumentation Engineer – Test Equipment and Benches (M/F)

About our client

Our client is a VSE (Very Small Enterprise) based north of Lyon, specializing in underground energies: oil, gas, geothermal, and CO2 storage. Its activity is entirely based on R&D: tests on geomaterials, geomechanics, and development of testing equipment for international clients.

Its multidisciplinary and multicultural team develops innovative technological solutions for efficiency, environmental protection, and cost control. The company is ISO 9001 certified and all its activities comply with its QHSE approach.

The position

Your role: to develop real testing methods. Based on a measurement need (temperature, pressure, displacement, deformation, ultrasound...), you will design, instrument, and validate high-temperature and high-pressure test cells. You will start by making an existing cell reliable: simplifying its assembly and disassembly, then validating it at higher temperatures. You will then launch the subsequent cells.

You will work with the team that designs the equipment today, and with the design office of a partner manufacturer that carries out detailed design and manufacturing plans. Approximately 70-80% design and development, 20-30% laboratory. Reporting to operations management.

What the position is not: neither a draftsman or calculator (detail and plans are outsourced), nor team management.

Your missions

  • Define the need, the specifications, and the functional pre-sizing of new cells.
  • Choose and integrate suitable sensors; resolve issues of sealing, temperature resistance, and pressure resistance.
  • Consult suppliers and subcontractors, monitor the manufacturing of parts.
  • Assemble, instrument, and test your equipment yourself in the laboratory; interpret measurements and improve.
  • Improve the ergonomics of existing equipment and transfer validated equipment to the testing team.
  • Write technical documentation and contribute to intellectual property protection.

Requirements

Essential

  • Mechanical design of equipment, with 3D CAD (no specific software imposed).
  • Instrumentation, sensors, and physical and physicochemical measurement techniques: choose and integrate, not manufacture.
  • Appreciation for hands-on work: you enjoy assembling, disassembling, and intervening on equipment yourself.

Important

  • Project management: planning, budget, suppliers.
  • Rigor, autonomy, proactive communication of difficulties.

A plus

  • Technical English (written exchanges with foreign suppliers).
  • Drawing, notions of materials and thermal insulation.
  • Experience in pressure or temperature.

Education and experience

  • Engineering degree (Bac +5) in mechanical engineering, physics engineering, instrumentation, or physical measurements. A background combining mechanical engineering and physical measurements (BUT Physical Measurements then Mechanical Engineering school) is particularly appreciated.
  • Approximately 5 years of experience in equipment design, design office, or R&D; more junior profiles will be considered.
  • Position focused on design and field work: a thesis is not required.

Conditions

On-site. Occasional handling of heavy metal parts with lifting equipment. Profit-sharing
Salary: €36,000 – €48,000 gross per year depending on experience

Benefits

You will join a human-sized company where every development matters: your equipment will be directly used for R&D projects carried out for international clients. You will work within a dynamic and multicultural team, on demanding technical subjects serving underground energies and the energy transition.
