As a lead technician for welding and burning, you will perform complex and certified welding and cutting work on the constructions of naval ships. You will work in hard-to-reach places and in challenging positions, where accuracy and safety are essential. In addition, you will monitor the quality of the welding work, guide colleagues, and coordinate activities during larger maintenance projects. This way, you ensure that ship structures remain safe, strong, and reliable, and that naval ships are deployable.
You are an experienced specialist within the team responsible for technical maintenance of naval ships. You will perform complex welding work on, among other things, the ship's hull, structural parts, and lifting eyes. You will regularly work in hard-to-reach places or from difficult working positions.
You will independently determine which auxiliary structures are necessary and will construct them when needed. You will also prepare weld seams and finish them using, for example, electric gouging, grinding, or milling. For removing ship structures, you will use the correct cutting and dismantling techniques according to applicable procedures.
You will assess the quality of executed welding work and check if the preparation meets the specified requirements. When necessary, you will determine which non-destructive testing is required, for example, to check the quality of a weld without damaging the material.
In addition to your own craftsmanship, you have a coordinating role. You will advise work planners on the required capacity, materials, and resources, coordinate activities with other disciplines, and monitor planning, quality, safety, and costs. You will also guide colleagues and hired employees in technically complex tasks.
An important part of your role is heat treatment. You will ensure that materials are heated according to the prescribed process and cooled down under control. You will correctly set up heating equipment and temperature sensors and monitor the conditions during the process.
- Perform complex welding, cutting, and repair work on ship structures, including in hard-to-reach places.
- Assess welding work and determine which checks and non-destructive tests are necessary to guarantee quality.
- Construct necessary auxiliary structures and prepare weld seams using gouging, grinding, and milling.
- Coordinate technical activities and monitor planning, quality, safety, resources, and costs within maintenance projects.
- Perform heat treatments and monitor temperature, environmental conditions, and controlled cooling of materials.
- Guide and instruct colleagues and external employees in complex welding, construction, and shipbuilding work.

The Royal Netherlands Navy strongly values personal growth and career development and offers numerous opportunities for this. In addition to your salary, you will receive an Individual Choice Budget (IKB). The IKB consists of money (16.33% of your gross annual salary) and time. With the IKB, you make the choices that suit you and can partially compose your employment conditions yourself. For example, you can choose to have a portion of your monthly income paid out when you wish. You can also convert this budget into extra vacation hours or spend it on tax-friendly goals, such as an (electric) bicycle or laptop. It is also possible to (temporarily) reduce your working hours by a few hours per week.
We also believe it is important that you can combine working at the Ministry of Defence with your private life. Various leave arrangements (e.g., 75% paid parental leave) and attention to physical and mental health contribute to a good balance. For instance, you can make free use of our extensive sports facilities. In addition to a pension scheme with ABP, you will receive a monthly travel allowance or, under favorable conditions, you can opt for a public transport pass with unlimited travel throughout the Netherlands.
Organization description
The Ministry of Defence is committed to the interests, welfare, and freedom of the Netherlands. We are active daily both domestically and abroad. Our global deployment strengthens international cooperation and ensures that people can develop freely. Now and in the future.
Approximately 79,000 people work directly and indirectly for peace and security at the Ministry of Defence. The Ministry consists of the Materiel & IT Command (COMMIT), the Administrative Staff (the department), the Royal Netherlands Navy, the Royal Netherlands Army, the Royal Netherlands Air Force, the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, and the Defence Support Command (DOSCO).
Defence is one of the largest employers in the Netherlands and exhibits similarities with a large company. The operational commands (sea, land, and air forces), the Marechaussee, DOSCO, and COMMIT function like operating companies.
Department description
You will work within the Directorate of Material Maintenance (DMI) of the Royal Netherlands Navy in Den Helder. DMI is responsible for the maintenance, modification, and technical support of naval ships and their systems.
You will work in a specialized technical team and have daily contact with work planners, engineers, supervisors, and other technical disciplines. You will also guide employees from external companies when work is outsourced.
You will work both in the workshop and on board naval ships. Depending on the assignment, work may take place at other locations in the Netherlands or abroad.
