Job Description

Are you an experienced captain who prioritizes safety and enjoys transferring your knowledge and experience to the next generation? Then we have a unique position for you.
For the Defence Sailing School of the Royal Netherlands Navy, we are looking for a Captain of Training Vessels. A role in which you are not only responsible for the safe navigation and deployment of our training vessels, but also play an important part in training, supervising, and assessing students.
And perhaps most importantly: you don't have to be a military officer for this role. You can also work for us as a civilian.

As captain, you are responsible for the safe deployment and execution of sailing assignments. You:
- prepare the training vessel for planned deployment;
- prepare sailing trips nautically and logistically;
- ensure that navigation, safety, and medical equipment are in optimal condition;
- maneuver the vessel and coach the person at the helm where necessary;
- monitor safe navigation, procedures, and the safety of the ship, crew, and passengers;
- coordinate actions during emergencies on board;
- maintain ship administration and relevant records;
- monitor the technical and operational condition of the vessel;
- coordinate the deployment of the vessel with colleagues, coordinators, waterway managers, and port authorities.

As captain, you bear the ultimate responsibility for the safety of the ship, the crew, and all passengers.
This means you must be firm. When safety demands it, you dare to adjust or even interrupt an operational assignment. Not the schedule, but safety ultimately determines whether and how sailing takes place.

Job Requirements

Knowledge/Education Requirements:
- MBO work and thinking level
- Small Boat License II
- MARCOM-B
- Knowledge of applicable sailing regulations, including the BPR (Inland Waterway Police Regulations)
- Good knowledge of and experience with navigation equipment and nautical instruments.

Plus:
- Experience with sailing and maneuvering small vessels;
- Work experience as a nautical instructor
