Freelance Senior Drupal Developer (m/w/d) - deutschsprachig remote

B-works is a digital agency focusing on tailored web solutions. We realize complex web projects with Drupal and AI for demanding clients from the public and private sectors, including cantonal hospitals, authorities, social insurance institutions, and private organizations.

We are building a small circle of preferred senior development partners. Whoever has worked with us once will be asked first for new mandates - before we open up to the open market. We are not looking for one-time service providers. We are looking for technically excellent developers who appreciate serious work, deliver reliably, and think long-term.

Project details

• Location: Remote, presence meetings in Europe upon project requirements
• Engagement model: Project-based for pure development mandates; Retainer model possible when taking over technical project leadership (see below)
• Hourly rate: 50-70 EUR depending on experience and seniority
• Project pipeline: Complex Drupal web projects - relaunches, new developments, SLA management, and AI integrations for public and private clients
• Next project: Start in April/May 2026
• Availability: Flexible arrangement according to project schedule; Retainer portion Mo-Fr 09:00-17:00 CET/CEST

Tasks

Development - choose your track:

Back-End:

• Drupal 10/11 setup and architecture, content modeling (Paragraphs, Layout Builder)
• Custom module development: clean, documented, maintainable
• Search API and Solr, including PDF indexing and auto-complete
• REST API integrations (third-party systems, booking, AI interfaces)
• Webforms with complex calculations and CMS-manageable parameters
• Performance optimization, security (OWASP), CI/CD, Composer, Git

Front-End:

• Drupal theming with Twig, component-based architecture
• Implementation of designs in barrier-free, performant Drupal templates (WCAG 2.1 AA)
• Integration of design systems and pattern libraries
• JavaScript, CSS/SASS, performance optimization in the frontend layer
• Tight collaboration with backend development and UX/design

Full-Stack:

• Combination of the above tasks according to project requirements
• Ideal for candidates who bridge front-end and back-end and are technically well-rounded

All tracks:

• Participation in agile sprint teams
• Code reviews and technical documentation according to agency standards
• WCAG 2.1 AA, DSGVO, Swiss DSG/nDSG, OWASP where relevant

Qualification

Essential (all tracks):

• German language skills at native speaker level
• At least 5 years of Drupal experience in the chosen track (Back-End, Front-End, or Full-Stack) in a digital agency or comparable environment
• Drupal 10/11 as active core competence - not just legacy experience
• Qualification through at least one of the following: Acquia certification matching the track (Back End Specialist, Front End Specialist, or Certified Developer), OR active Drupal Org profile with contributions to Drupal-10/11 modules or core, OR public code portfolio (GitHub/GitLab) with Drupal examples from the last 2 years
• Project experience in the public sector or institutions

Technical - Back-End:

• PHP 8.3+, object-oriented development, dependency injection, Drupal Services-Layer
• Search API/Solr, REST APIs, third-party system integrations
• Webform with complex calculations, custom module development

Technical - Front-End:

• Twig, Drupal theme architecture, component-based development
• JavaScript, CSS/SASS, performance and barrier-free (WCAG 2.1 AA)
• Understanding of the Drupal render system and theme hook systems

Technical - Full-Stack:

• Solid knowledge in both above areas
• Ability to switch between front-end and back-end according to project phase
