Forward Deployed Engineer (m/w/d)

Full Time Senior

Job description

We are who we are

The Mayflower GmbH builds individual software with a focus on Generative AI – since 1998 privately owned.

We bring complete AI infrastructure into production: Model-Serving, Agent-Gateways, Chat and Voice – directly in the customer's environment. At our company, you can expect an agile work environment with responsibility at eye level - without hierarchies.

For our Forward Deployed Engineering department, we are looking for someone who builds AI systems, deploys them, and is responsible for their production run.

What awaits you

Forward Deployed means to us: You are an observer, architect, and developer in one person. The same person who understands the customer's problem, writes the code that solves it - and stays until it runs productively.

  • End-to-End Ownership: You are responsible for deployments from discovery over technical scoping, architecture, and build to production rollout in the customer's infrastructure - embedded in their engineering and specialist teams.
  • Full-Stack, literally meant: You work across all layers - Model-Serving (vLLM, own GPU clusters), Agent-Gateways and Runtimes, RAG/GraphRAG Pipelines, specialized agents, integration into ERP, CRM, DMS, and legacy systems.
  • Built on a solid foundation: You deploy and expand our product stacks (mAIstack, VoiceAI, Amicable) at the customer's site, instead of starting each project from scratch – with LLMs like GPT, Gemini, Claude or Nemotron, Agent Frameworks, and agent harnesses. Vector databases and RAG are part of your toolkit; as a senior, you ensure that the systems remain measurable and controllable in operation - through dataset-based evaluations, logging/tracing, and observability.
  • The feedback loop is part of the job: What emerges as a recurring pattern in the field, you codify with your team in our products, skills, and playbooks. Your project knowledge does not remain at the customer's site - it makes the next deployment faster.
  • Customer on eye level: You develop in workshops a common understanding of problem, opportunities, and solution, make trade-off decisions between scope, tempo, and quality - and speak up about what the customer doesn't want to hear if it protects the result.
  • Vision: You bring your experiences into whitepapers, talks, and our AI products - with support from our technical editorial team.

You should bring

  • At least 10 years of experience in software development, ideally at an individual software service provider or in IT consulting.
  • You have brought LLM systems into production - not just prototyped: RAG implementations, Vector databases, Agent Frameworks (LangGraph, OpenAI Agent SDK etc.), Evals, and MLOps.
  • Experience with integrating AI systems into existing, grown enterprise architectures - including the unpleasant parts (Auth, Legacy, Compliance).
  • A plus: Experience with inference infrastructure (vLLM, GPU-Serving), Kubernetes, and on-prem/private cloud deployments.
  • The competence to convey AI concepts to departments and C-level executives in a comprehensible manner - and the stability to take ownership of decisions.
  • German and English language skills at C1 level.
  • Readiness to work phase-by-phase on-site at the customer's location (project-dependent, remote-embedded as standard), plus workshops and conferences 1-2 times a month within Germany.

We have to offer

  • Competitive remuneration: We pay the position with a gross annual salary of €80,000 to €90,000 at 40 weeks per year.
  • Real production responsibility: Your systems run productively at large corporate groups - not in the demo environment.
  • Built software: Here, we place great value on code and software quality.
  • No 08/15: Variety through different industries, use cases, and technologies - from GPU clusters to voice agents.
  • Customer relationship at eye level: We cultivate a honest and trusting cooperation with our customers.
  • Making a difference: Much responsibility, great scope for design - in a mid-sized company where your contribution directly affects the economic success.
  • Learns always to: Further education (internally and externally), training-on-the-job, and regular development and salary discussions.
  • Work self-organized: We give you the space to co-create good work with us - in the team like at the customer's site.
  • Becomes famous: A technical editorial team supports you in writing and publishing, so that you become visible as an expert externally.
  • You don't have to be the smartest person in the room: Real sparring partners who test your ideas together with you and develop them further.
  • Just switch off: Nobody expects availability after work hours, during vacation or due to illness. Many overtime hours are not common at our company.
  • Good for mental health: First aid for mental health, Employee Assistance Program, and an open approach to mental well-being.
  • Space for your private life: Flexible working hours, up to four days of home office per week, spontaneous day off, work from EU countries, sabbatical or 4 weeks of vacation at a time.
  • Bring your +1 with: Brave office dogs or children on school-free weekdays are warmly welcome.
  • Financial benefits: Regular team events, Wellpass, 30 days of vacation, kindergarten allowance, German civil servant pension.
