Job description

Your Role

In most companies, the monthly closing process involves a chain of manual tasks that no one has fully documented. Anyone who wants to understand how company figures are actually generated needs to have seen this chain from the inside.

Vogel is one of the most successful medium-sized consulting firms in Germany — several thousand medium-sized companies trust us with their tax, commercial, and strategic issues. Based on this, we are building the leading consulting platform for the German mid-market: we are growing organically and through acquisitions, consolidating a fragmented market, and integrating each new entity into a common setup. Our financial structure is growing with us. In these three to six months, you will work on closing, planning, and automation simultaneously — and on acquisitions, you will be involved in auditing the target company's figures.

You are still studying, comfortable with numbers, and not looking for an internship where you sort receipts. You want to contribute to real financial statements, build your own analyses, and learn where time is lost in a financial operation. This is exactly what you will get here.

You will report to the Manager Finance & Accounting and work with the M&A Lead on transactions. Those who perform well during their internship will receive an offer for a full-time position with us.

Your Responsibility

Accounting and Closing

  • Participate in the monthly closing of our companies — reconciliations, accruals, support for consolidation.

  • Take responsibility for your own closing areas with a clear scope and deliver them on time.

  • Document your work steps so that a third party can understand them without your help.

Planning, Analysis, and Due Diligence of Target Companies

  • Build analyses on location-specific results, cost centers, and utilization, and derive conclusions from them, not just tables.

  • Assist in the due diligence of acquired or to-be-acquired companies — preparation of annual financial statements, normalization of results, plausibility checks of figures.

  • Verify assumptions that are considered established within the company. Kindly pointing out that a figure is incorrect is explicitly part of the task.

Automation

  • Automate recurring steps in our financial processes — data transfers, reconciliation routines, report generation.

  • Measure how much time your automation actually saves, and be honest if it's less than expected.

  • Document how your setups work so that someone can operate them after you.

Your Perspectives

Where the position can lead:

The standard path leads to entry into the Finance department and then to the Manager level. Both expert and management career paths are open. What you receive is based on your contribution — years of experience alone do not move things forward with us.

What You Bring

Experience & Track Record

  • You are studying with a focus on accounting, controlling, finance, or business informatics — university, college, or cooperative state university (DHBW).

  • You have seriously engaged with accounting and understand how an annual financial statement is structured.

  • You have delivered above-average results in some field and can prove it.

  • Profiles that do not fit the above criteria but possess numerical substance are expressly invited — we evaluate based on contribution, not labels. Specifically: Tax assistants with ongoing studies who know financial accounting from the inside; students from mathematics or physics with an interest in accounting; individuals who have taught themselves automation and want to apply it to commercial processes. The stated range refers to the primary profile. Those with different backgrounds will start at a different market rate — the transition to permanent employment follows the same logic as for everyone: compensation follows contribution. This is detailed in our compensation principles.

Skills & Work Style

  • You master Excel beyond pivot tables and build models that someone else can also operate.

  • You have had initial contact with automation — scripts, Power Query, an automation environment. Where this is missing, you demonstrate a clear desire for it.

  • You work with AI as a standard tool — analysis, document review, reconciliation routines, drafting explanations.

  • You work meticulously. In accounting, a transposed number is not just a minor flaw.

Mindset & Personality

  • You have a natural aversion to inaccuracy and pursue deviations until you understand them.

  • You have the humility to learn from practitioners. The colleague who has been doing the closing for fifteen years knows the exceptions.

  • You naturally treat confidential information as confidential without being told to do so.

  • You have the ambition to set the highest standard in everything you deliver — not because someone is checking it, but because mediocrity personally bothers you.

What you will NOT find with us

  • No internship as a receipt sorter. You will work on real financial statements and be responsible for your own areas.

  • No purely back-office accounting role. You will see how numbers turn into decisions and be involved in transactions.

  • No setup where automation is a special project. Automation is part of your daily work.

  • No “you’ll get to work independently someday.” With us, it’s from day one: you do, you own, you are corrected if necessary — but you don’t wait.

FAQ

1. What is Vogel — and where do you work?

Vogel is one of Germany's leading medium-sized consultancies — a family business since 1959, from Aalen — and is building the leading consulting platform for the mid-market. We are growing at several locations: in Aalen, our established headquarters in Ostwürttemberg, and in Munich as a new hub. At both locations, we are looking for people across all functions — from tax consulting to advisory and the strategic teams building the platform.

2. How are the salary bands to be understood?

Intentionally broad — and specified at each point. We differentiate based on track record and market value, not degree: scarce, highly sought-after profiles at the upper end, less scarce ones at the lower end. We calibrate exclusively on the market — two people with similar experience can earn differently with us.

3. How much — and how — do you work at Vogel?

We measure what you achieve, not hours. However, it's also true: those looking for a 9-to-5 are not our first choice. We seek people who work intensely out of their own drive because the tasks are worthwhile. How you manage your time is largely up to you. What we share: we work collaboratively in person — culture, sparring, and the best ideas emerge from daily proximity. We are not a remote company and do not have extensive home office policies; occasional remote days are not a problem.

4. How does the application process work?

Lean, fast, transparent — and tiered by profile. For entry-level roles (internship, working student, entry-level professional), usually two interviews and a short work sample are sufficient; experienced roles are a bit more extensive. For selected senior roles, we are exploring the possibility of incorporating a joint workday in the future so that both sides can get to know each other better. Always applicable: scheduled appointments, swift decisions, substantial feedback — regardless of the outcome.

5. How does variable compensation work?

Tied to performance quarterly, evaluated qualitatively. The scale increases with the level: up to 20% Associate, 27.5% Manager, 35% Senior Manager, 42.5% Director, 50% VP. The expected value with good performance — you meet the requirements, set your own accents, pass the keeper test — is around 50% of the maximum; the maximum bonus is not the norm. The focus is on a holistic assessment by your manager: ownership, quality, learning curve, collaboration, impact.

6. How do I develop — what are the career paths?

Two active paths: Mastery (technical depth, expert career) and Pioneer (leadership, management). You choose the direction after onboarding, usually in years 1-3. Entry-level professional is not a separate path, but the early part of the same journey — from working student or intern to Associate, for the best without a new application process.

7. Team, Culture, Vacation?

A shared lunch is an open daily offer — not mandatory; whoever wants to join, can, everyone can eat at any time. In addition, dinners, social events, and offsites at regular intervals — not as a mandatory program, but because a good team also shares time outside of work. Benefits: well-thought-out and substantial, not symbolic. Vacation: 28 days.

8. I know someone — is there a referral bonus?

Yes — €2,500 for each successfully filled position (no internships). A brief context is enough: who you are thinking of, for which role, why. It doesn't have to be perfect, but substantial.
