30-35 hours per week (Negotiable) | Frontline leadership | No overnight shifts
Monday-Friday, primarily 2.30pm-8.30pm | $35-$37 per hour

Lead the shift. Support the team. Create a safe, calm environment.

The Christchurch City Mission is looking for an experienced frontline leader to supervise our Women’s Night Shelter evening service.

This is a 30-35-hour-per-week (negotiable), hands-on leadership role, with additional hours potentially available from time to time to support service coverage. You’ll lead staff on shift, coordinate shelter operations and work alongside women experiencing homelessness and other complex needs.

About the role

  • Lead and support staff on shift
  • Coordinate intake and evening shelter operations
  • Maintain a safe, calm and well-organised environment
  • Respond to challenging situations and lead incident responses
  • Make sound decisions and maintain clear professional boundaries
  • Ensure safety processes, documentation and handovers are completed
  • Manage rosters and contribute to staff development
  • Work with Social Work, Clinical Services and other Mission teams

What we’re looking for

To be successful, you’ll need both:

People leadership experience: Experience supervising, coordinating or leading staff in a frontline environment. You do not need to have held a formal Team Leader or Supervisor title, but you do need real experience providing direction and taking responsibility for a team.

Complex-needs experience: Direct experience supporting people affected by homelessness, mental health challenges, addiction, trauma, family violence, significant social disadvantage or similar complex needs.

You’ll also bring:

  • L4 Health & Wellbeing (or equivalent experience)
  • Confidence managing challenging behaviour and de-escalating situations
  • Calm, practical decision-making under pressure
  • Experience coordinating a shift or frontline service
  • Strong communication and professional boundaries
  • A respectful, trauma-informed and mana-enhancing approach

Your background

You might come from homelessness or housing support, mental health or AOD, community services, family violence, youth work, corrections, crisis services or supported accommodation.

You don’t need previous night shelter experience. What matters is that you bring both frontline leadership experience and experience working with people with complex social needs.

Why join us?

  • Meaningful work with real impact
  • A supportive team and wider Mission services
  • Consistent weekday hours with no overnight shifts
  • Wellbeing allowance and birthday leave

Ready to lead a frontline service where calm leadership, good judgement and consistency matter? We’d like to hear from you.
