Environmental Measurement Technician

As an environmental measurement technician, you're not stuck still, you travel all over the country or even around the world to measure emissions from various companies. These measurements are performed in different teams. You take care of preparing the measuring equipment and the necessary materials for the measurements. At the measurement location, you set up the measurement setup with your colleagues, perform the measurements, and after completion, ensure that the equipment is ready for the next assignment and that the samples are sent to various (SGS-) laboratories.

Our environmental measurement technician gives you a glimpse into her day:

'Usually my workday starts around half past 8 at the office. Together with my colleague, I drive to the measurement location with the measuring equipment. These locations vary greatly. From a fragrance factory, a pizzeria, an oil refinery, a barge or combustion facilities at power plants. I've been to many different companies already!

Before we head to the measurement location, we prepare everything well. For example, we contact clients and make agreements on the measures to be taken to measure on site.

The emissions measurements involve a palette of measurements that we perform. We must therefore carefully consider what we need for each measurement. Organizing and communicating is also something I enjoy.

We often work outdoors or at heights. I find it pleasant that I'm physically active. Sitting still is not for me. During the measurement, I keep track of the values and whether they match expectations. On site, I have regular contact with the client.

Once the measurements are complete, we ensure the safe storage of all samples, measurements, and our equipment. We process the data at a later time once the laboratory results are known and work out the report. We return to the office in Arnhem. The workday is over.'
