Tasks

In a multidisciplinary project together with the Makerspace at Ruhr University Bochum, you will develop intelligent systems that automatically recognize objects/materials and make them accessible for further use. You will work at the interface of AI, hardware, and web applications and bring your own ideas actively into implementation. In doing so, you combine software development with practical work on sensors and camera systems. The goal is to build a functioning overall solution consisting of an AI model, recognition system, and user interface.

• Development and training of AI models in the field of Image Recognition/Computer Vision.
• BUILDING AND OPTIMIZATION OF DATA SETS FOR OBJECT RECOGNITION.
• Development of a web app (plus database) for visualization and interaction with recognized objects.
• Integration of AI models into a functioning system architecture.
• Conceptualization and setup of a camera and sensor system for data acquisition.
• Conducting tests in real-world environments.
• Optimization of performance, accuracy, and real-time capability of systems.
• (Optional) Support with prototyping of the installed hardware.

Qualification

You bring a solid technical foundation and are eager to implement AI not just on the computer but also in the real world. Ideally, you combine software development with an understanding of hardware and enjoy thinking about systems holistically – from data acquisition to application for the user.

• Studies in the field of Computer Science, AI, Data Science, Electrical Engineering or comparable.
• Good knowledge in the field of Image Recognition/Computer Vision (e.g. with PyTorch or TensorFlow).
• Experience in training and optimizing AI models as well as working with data sets.
• Knowledge in developing web apps (Frontend + Backend).
• Experience with at least one popular framework such as React, Angular, or Node.js.
• Understanding of binding web applications to external systems (APIs, databases, real-time data).
• Fundamental understanding of hardware components (e.g. cameras, microcontrollers, edge devices like Raspberry Pi).
• Self-motivated and structured working style as well as enthusiasm for prototyping.
• Bonus: Experience in soldering, building circuits or developing simple printed circuit boards (PCB).
