CONTEXT

A school under the supervision of the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, and a member of the Institut Mines Telecom, IMT Nord Europe has 3 main missions: to train responsible engineers capable of addressing the major challenges of the 21st century; to conduct research leading to high added-value innovations; to support territorial development, particularly by facilitating innovation and business creation. Its objective is to train the engineers of tomorrow, mastering both digital technologies and industrial expertise. The position is to be filled within the Center for Teaching, Research and Innovation in Energy and Environment (CERI EE) (https://recherche.imt-nord-europe.fr/energie-environnement-ceri/).

CERI EE develops activities at the heart of energy and environmental transitions. Its research is oriented towards atmospheric sciences, indoor environmental quality, and the challenges of energy efficiency and decarbonization. The CERI is structured into three thematic axes: EFT (Energy, Fluids and Transfers), OSPA (Atmospheric Physico-chemical Observations, Sources and Processes), and QEI (Indoor Environmental Quality).

The QEI thematic axis focuses on the study, identification, and characterization of pollutant sources in enclosed and/or confined spaces, the analysis of interactions between indoor air and materials, and the study of the influence of environments on occupant exposure and well-being. The scientific issues addressed cover multiple scales, from the integration of innovative energy systems and materials to their impacts on indoor spaces and their occupants. In a context marked by climate change and increasing demands for IEQ and energy efficiency, particular attention is paid to adaptation and mitigation strategies, as well as the roles of occupant behavior and various exposure sources.

This position aims to strengthen and develop the QEI thematic axis within CERI. IEQ integrates the study of multiple comfort parameters (temperature, humidity, noise, lighting) and air composition in enclosed environments (homes, workspaces, transportation, etc.), to ensure occupant well-being and health. These environments must reconcile environmental and energy transitions with air quality and occupant comfort.

The ambition is to consolidate IMT Nord Europe's positioning in this field, with synergy between research and training. It involves strengthening an interdisciplinary research and teaching network on this theme in response to societal expectations, public authorities, and socio-economic actors. Recruitment is based on a research and teaching project led by a PhD holder and aligned with this strategy.

In this context, IMT Nord Europe is recruiting a Researcher and Lecturer whose missions are described below.

MISSIONS:

Under the authority of the Director of CERI EE, the position holder will participate in teaching, research, and technology transfer activities:

Research and Technology Transfer Activities:

Within the general framework of the scientific strategy described above, the research will aim to develop scientific knowledge and tools for the purpose of improving indoor environmental air quality (particularly, but not exclusively, in buildings), occupant health, comfort, and exposure, while supporting the transformations of the built environment necessary for ecological and energy transition.

Expected research themes could include:

• Preserving IEQ in the face of climate change and the necessary adaptation to this change;

• The contributions of indoor environments to occupant exposure, including methods for evaluating and optimizing occupant exposure and comfort;

• The impacts of energy sobriety of innovative and sustainable energy systems on IEQ.

The recruited person will be required to:

• Develop high-level research activity in the field of IEQ,

• Initiate, conduct, and coordinate regional, national, and eventually European research projects,

• Develop contractual research and technology transfer actions in partnership with socio-economic stakeholders,

• Create bridges between the thematic axes of CERI EE and other CERIs in line with the areas of excellence of IMT Nord Europe and the Institut Mines Télécom,

• Supervise doctoral students, post-doctoral researchers, and Master's students,

• Prepare a Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR - accreditation to supervise research),

• Contribute to the visibility of the theme in close collaboration with other CERI colleagues, particularly internationally,

• Publish in leading conferences and journals in the field, and participate in the organization of scientific events.

Teaching Activities:

CERI EE is involved in all Engineering degree programs. It notably leads two of the school's eight specialization tracks: GE (Energy Engineering) and GERI (Environmental Engineering and Industrial Risks) in initial training and an apprenticeship program in Energy Engineering. CERI EE also leads two Specialized Master's programs (MS): MS in Positive Energy Buildings, and MS in Management of Professional and Technological Risks. CERI EE also provides continuing education teaching activities, particularly in relation to IEQ. Finally, CERI EE plans to develop an International Master's program project in the short term, “Engineering of Sustainable and Healthy Built Environment,” in which the recruited person will support those in charge of developing this program.

The recruited person will be required to:

• In conjunction with the ongoing development of an International Master’s program in Engineering of Sustainable and Healthy Built Environment, propose a teaching project that will, in part, support the leads of this Master's program to:

– Contribute to the pedagogical finalization and promotion of this new program,

– Contribute to the teaching and tutoring of Master's students. Based on the European alliance EuLiST, this Master’s aims to align research and teaching activities. These courses will be taught in English.

• Contribute to teaching activities in the various programs offered at the School, in their area of specialization (IEQ) and in related fields (e.g., chemistry, thermodynamics, ...) depending on their disciplinary scope;

• Contribute to pedagogical activities across all programs offered by IMT Nord Europe, according to their areas of expertise and pedagogical needs;

• Contribute to the implementation of pedagogical innovations integrating digital tools (MOOCs, flipped classrooms, etc.),

• Engage in pedagogical supervision activities (projects, internships, tutoring) and selection (competitive exams).

PROFILE: (Prerequisites/Degree)

The selected candidate must hold a doctorate and have research experience in the field of Indoor Environmental Quality or in a discipline contributing to its study, such as indoor air physical chemistry, individual exposure assessment, or the energy and environmental performance of buildings. The profile sought is primarily based on solid experimental skills, complemented by a good understanding of the challenges and simulation tools for indoor air quality. Thus, an aptitude for conducting research at disciplinary interfaces is sought to link occupant exposure and comfort issues with building characteristics and strategies for improving their energy performance.

The candidate is expected to:

• Demonstrate an ability to grasp the multidisciplinary issues related to IEQ, with scientific openness to integrate varied problems and work at disciplinary interfaces;

• Show an aptitude for developing new skills in disciplinary fields complementary to their initial profile;

• Possess a good understanding of the industrial and societal challenges related to the position's themes;

• Provide evidence of high-quality scientific activity, reflected in publications in high-impact journals and conferences, ideally in collaboration with international teams;

• Present, if possible, experience in setting up and managing projects funded by competitive calls for proposals, with successful acquisition of external funding, or demonstrate an aptitude for coordinating collective actions;

• Show an interest in knowledge transfer and teaching, demonstrating, if possible, experience in pedagogical innovations (MOOCs, blended learning, active methods);

• Demonstrate organizational and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with all stakeholders (teaching, research, technical support, and industrial partners in particular);

• Show autonomy, initiative, team spirit, and a strong sense of public service;

• Possess strong scientific communication and popularization skills, in both French and English.

International experience, participation in collaborative projects, and an initial network within academic and/or industrial communities will be considered assets. The preparation of the HDR will be part of the recruited person's career development plan.

The administrative residence is fixed in Douai. Regular travel is expected across all school campuses, particularly for teaching, but also more generally at national and international levels within the framework of research activities.
