CONTEXT

The position is to be filled within the Materials & Processes CERI (CERI MP), a research center focused on the deployment of new materials and processes necessary for ecological and industrial transitions. The CERI MP notably develops expertise in civil engineering, eco-materials, circular economy, bio-based and geo-based materials, recycling, waste valorization, material durability, multi-physical testing, modeling, and digital processes.

In a context of transformation within the construction sector, BIM is a major lever for designing, building, operating, renovating, and deconstructing buildings more sustainably. This recruitment aims to strengthen IMT Nord Europe's training offering in the field of BIM and to develop original research at the interface of digital models, material knowledge, eco-design, circular economy, and the overall performance of buildings throughout their life cycle.

In this context, IMT Nord Europe is recruiting a Researcher Teacher whose missions are described below.

MISSIONS:

Under the authority of the Director of the Materials & Processes CERI, the position holder will be responsible for developing teaching and research activities in the field of BIM applied to sustainable building performance. He or she will contribute to training engineers capable of using digital models and building data to design, optimize, monitor, and improve the performance of structures, from the design phase to operation, renovation, deconstruction, and material valorization at the end of their life.

The position is integrated into a training-research-innovation logic. It should create a strong link between the CERI MP's expertise in sustainable construction materials, processes, recycling, and material valorization, and the emerging needs of the construction sector in terms of BIM, openBIM, life cycle assessment, performance monitoring, and decision support.

• Contribute to the development and animation of teaching in BIM, sustainable materials, and building performance in engineering and master's programs;

• Develop research activities on improving building performance over their life cycle, integrating material, environmental, economic, and operational dimensions.

Teaching Activities:

The recruited person will participate in lectures, tutorials, practical work, projects, and supervision within the Civil Engineering and Environment program, the DNM ADMODC – Advanced Design and Management of Durable Constructions, as well as in courses related to BIM, sustainable materials, and building performance. They may also contribute to other school programs, in initial training, apprenticeship, or continuing education, depending on pedagogical needs.

• Design, deliver, and evolve engineering and master's level courses on BIM fundamentals, digital models, openBIM, IFC, BIM coordination, and information management;

• Develop applied courses linking BIM, construction materials, eco-design, life cycle assessment, carbon indicators, energy performance, environmental performance, and structural durability;

• Implement tutorials and practical work involving: BIM modeling, data extraction and structuring, BIM-simulation coupling, BIM-LCA, material information management, renovation and end-of-life scenarios;

• Supervise integrated projects allowing students to work in teams on a real building or an industrial case: collaborative design, material selection, impact assessment, performance monitoring, and material valorization strategy;

• Participate in the supervision of internships, final-year projects, apprentices, research projects, and student work in conjunction with companies and the CERI MP experimental platforms;

• Contribute to the continuous improvement of pedagogical models, the competency-based approach, and alignment with engineering training expectations.

Research and Technology Transfer Activities:

The recruited person will develop, within the CERI MP, research activities focused on improving the sustainable performance of buildings throughout their life cycle, using BIM as a support for integration, structuring, and exploitation of data related to materials, processes, uses, and performance.

• Develop methods for enriching BIM models with reliable material mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, environmental properties, durability, aging, repairability, reuse potential, and recyclability;

• Integrate eco-design into BIM processes through material selection support, assessment of low-carbon construction solutions, multi-criteria evaluation, and coupling with life cycle assessment and life cycle cost analysis;

• Develop digital approaches to optimize recycling, reuse, and material valorization at the end of a building's life, particularly through BIM inventories, material passports, resource traceability, and selective deconstruction scenarios;

• Consider the actual performance of buildings during operation by linking BIM data with monitoring data, sensor data, Building Management Systems (BMS)/Energy Management Systems (EMS), maintenance, usage, and consumption data;

• Address interoperability, data quality, and governance issues: IFC formats, openBIM, material databases, ontologies, data models, indicator dashboards, and decision support;

• Leverage the CERI MP's experimental facilities to generate material data useful for numerical models, BIM models, and decision-support tools for sustainable construction solutions;

• Publish results in recognized journals and conferences and contribute to the supervision of doctoral students, post-doctoral researchers, engineers, master's students, and research final-year projects.

Collaborative Research, Innovation, and Valorization:

A significant aspect of the position will involve developing collaborations with industrial and territorial stakeholders in sustainable construction. The recruited person will contribute to fostering applied research projects, demonstrators, and use cases aligned with the sector's needs.

• Develop partnerships with construction companies, engineering firms, project owners, architects, building operators, material manufacturers, recycling platforms, deconstruction actors, and BIM software publishers or integrators;

• Set up and manage collaborative projects: CIFRE theses, regional projects, ADEME, ANR, Horizon Europe, Interreg, industrial chairs, research services, and pedagogical or technological demonstrators;

• Contribute to responding to calls for projects, drafting scientific and technical deliverables, valorizing results, and transferring them to companies and local authorities;

• Participate in academic and professional networks in the fields of BIM, sustainable construction, circular economy, low-carbon materials, and building performance.

Contribution to School Life:

• Participate in juries, defenses, pedagogical committees, promotional activities, forums, open days, and scientific valorization events;

• Contribute to the collective dynamic of the CERI MP, cross-functional actions with other research centers, and the School's quality assurance initiatives;

• Support students in their professional development, their awareness of environmental issues, and their ability to work in collaborative and digital environments.

PROFILE: (Prerequisites/Degree)

The position is intended for an individual holding a doctorate in civil engineering, sustainable building, BIM/digital construction, material science and engineering, building energy and environmental performance, data science applied to construction, or a related field. Accreditation to Supervise Research (HDR), postdoctoral experience, teaching experience in an engineering school, or industrial experience in the construction sector will be considered assets.

The sought profile should combine a solid scientific background, the ability to teach engineering students, and a desire to build a collaborative research program at the intersection of BIM, sustainable materials, circular economy, and building performance.

Proficiency in tools or environments such as Revit, Archicad, Tekla, Navisworks, Solibri, Dynamo, Grasshopper, Rhino, eveBIM, LCA software, energy simulation software, IFC databases, Python, or databases will be appreciated. However, recruitment will prioritize the ability to build a scientific and pedagogical vision of BIM rather than expertise limited to a specific software tool.

The administrative residence is established in Douai. Travel is expected to other school sites and to partners.
