Electrical Engineer

Job Title: Senior Electrical Engineer – Cost Reduction & Product Redesign Initiative

Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan

Initial Project Overview

The initial assignment will focus on a strategic product cost-reduction and redesign program aimed at reducing overall system and board-level costs while maintaining product performance, quality, manufacturability, and regulatory requirements. This is a long-term initiative with the potential to expand into additional R&D programs.

Key Responsibilities

Product Cost Reduction & Board Redesign

• Analyze existing electronic designs to identify cost-reduction opportunities.
• Simplify or eliminate over-engineered circuitry and components.
• Redesign PCB assemblies to reduce bill-of-materials (BOM) costs.
• Evaluate alternative system configurations to optimize cost and functionality.
• Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams on cost-down initiatives.

Component Selection & Qualification

• Research and identify lower-cost component alternatives.
• Support dual-sourcing strategies to improve supply chain resilience.
• Lead component evaluation, testing, and qualification efforts.
• Partner with sourcing and procurement teams on component selection decisions.

Power & Battery System Engineering

• Support redesign of legacy power-management architectures.
• Improve battery and power-system designs for cost, manufacturability, and reliability.
• Evaluate design tradeoffs and implement cost-effective solutions.

RF & Connectivity Evaluation

• Assess RF and wireless connectivity solutions for cost optimization opportunities.
• Support development of product variants with differing connectivity requirements.
• Recommend alternative technologies and architectures when appropriate.

Manufacturing & PCBA Integration

• Collaborate with PCB assembly and manufacturing partners throughout the redesign process.
• Ensure manufacturability, testability, and production quality are maintained.
• Support design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-test (DFT) activities.

Testing, Validation & R&D Support

• Develop and execute validation and testing plans.
• Manage laboratory activities associated with design verification.
• Analyze test results and drive design improvements.
• Support product development activities throughout the engineering lifecycle.

Project Leadership & Coordination

• Provide technical leadership for redesign activities.
• Assist with project planning, prioritization, and scope definition.
• Coordinate activities across engineering, sourcing, manufacturing, and quality teams.
• Help maintain project schedules and milestones in the absence of a dedicated project manager.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• 5+ years of electrical engineering experience, preferably in product development environments.
• Demonstrated experience with PCB and electronic system redesign.
• Experience with component selection, qualification, and sourcing support.
• Understanding of PCBA manufacturing processes and design-for-manufacturing principles.
• Experience developing and executing engineering test protocols.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with a focus on cost optimization.
• Ability to work independently while coordinating cross-functional activities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with power electronics, battery systems, or power-management architectures.
• Familiarity with RF, wireless communication, and Wi-Fi technologies.
• Prior experience leading technical projects or performing light project management responsibilities.
• Experience driving product cost-reduction initiatives from concept through implementation.
