Expert Environmental Monitoring | Environmental Officer

The environmental monitoring decree provides that each municipality must appoint an environmental officer (or 2 depending on the population size). Haviland offers this service to its partners (mainly local authorities in the Halle-Vilvoorde region). We are looking for a new, motivated colleague to support us in this!

As inter-municipal environmental officer, you will monitor compliance with environmental legislation:

• You will guide and support local authorities in developing and implementing their environmental monitoring policy, in accordance with existing environmental regulations;
• You will develop and implement projects aimed at preventing environmental offenses and breaches, taking into account the implementation of an inter-municipal preventive approach;
• You will study and provide advice on environmental permit files, taking into account the imposition of special conditions;
• You will conduct on-site inspections to determine compliance with environmental legislation, issue warnings or verbalize, report your findings, and take necessary safety or restoration measures;
• You will follow up on your own files independently but work closely with your colleague-environmental officers and verbalizers spatial planning to ensure a well-informed decision-making process;
• In the performance of your function, you will be in close contact with clients (local authorities) and your nearest colleagues from the environmental monitoring team at Haviland. With your team, you can also work on assignments that fall within the classical domains of environmental policy (water, soil, air, nuisance, waste,...). This is based in Asse (Relegem), where Haviland is located. Your working area will be situated throughout the entire territory of the Halle-Vilvoorde arrondissement. There are also ample opportunities for telework.

• Bachelor or master's degree, preferably in a field with affinity for environmental issues or monitoring;
• In possession of a competence certificate 'environmental officer' or willing to follow this training;
• Some relevant work experience is required;
• Familiarity with environmental legislation (particularly Vlarem II);
• Familiarity with the functioning of local authorities is a plus;
• Strong communication skills (written and oral);
• Dynamically, extremely self-reliant, and keen on initiative and innovation;
• Great willingness to learn and ability to quickly adapt;
• Organizational strength, stress-resistant (manage deadlines), and flexible;
• You have a valid B driving license;
• Excellent knowledge of Dutch (native language level). Knowledge of French is a plus.
