Design Engineer

RPO’s client is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Design Engineer to join their Engineering team based in Ottery, Cape Town. This role is ideal for individuals with a strong background in machine design and automation who are passionate about engineering innovation, precision, and performance.

Mechanical Design & Concept Development

• Execute and refine mechanical design concepts using design thinking, creativity, and technical analysis.
• Apply sound engineering principles to ensure solutions are functional, manufacturable, and aligned with user needs.
• Evaluate designs for feasibility, constructability, and compliance with quality standards.

Manufacturing Drawing Preparation

• Generate highly accurate CAD models and manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks.
• Ensure drawings reflect correct dimensions, tolerances, specifications, and assembly details for production use.
• Maintain drafting standards and ensure all documentation is up to date and in line with project requirements.

Engagement with Fabricators & Production Teams

• Collaborate with fabricators and internal stakeholders to resolve material, construction, and design-related queries.
• Address feasibility concerns and propose practical solutions to technical challenges.
• Provide support during the manufacturing process and respond to any clarifications related to the design.

Verification & Quality Assurance

• Conduct verification of manufactured parts against design specifications and drawings.
• Ensure all components meet dimensional accuracy, tolerances, and required quality standards.
• Participate in reviews of complex components, particularly where tight tolerances or high precision are involved.

• Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering is essential.

• Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in a technical design role, ideally within automation.
  • Minimum 3 years' hands-on experience in machine design and automation.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience with CAD software (SolidWorks preferred).

• Technical Competencies:

  • Strong grasp of engineering principles, machine design, and automation systems.
  • Proficient in fabrication processes and translating concepts into manufacturable designs.
  • Strong technical accuracy with the ability to generate clear, complete, and high-quality drawings.
  • Sound judgement in balancing design requirements, manufacturing limitations, and project timelines.
