Cultural Advisor - NPTSS

Part Time

Job description

About Us

We are part of a newly established consortium of six Primary Health Organisations (PHOs) working together to deliver the Nurse Practitioner Training Support Scheme (NPTSS). This nationally coordinated, regionally responsive Scheme is designed to support nurses during the final year of their Nurse Practitioner (NP) training and the first 6 months following registration.

Our six PHOs are recognised as strategic influencers within the health system. Collectively, we support more than 450 general practices across key regions providing reach, local insight and sector expertise. We will collaborate with other parts of the health sector nationally and regionally who may employ NP trainees as part of this programme.

As a collective, we are committed to ensuring the NPTSS is scalable, equitable, and responsive to the diverse needs of NP candidates, including those working in urban, rural and isolated communities across Aotearoa.

Opportunity

As the NPTSS continues to grow, we're excited to offer opportunities across the motu - meaning you can apply no matter where you're based. Our Cultural Support Advisors play a pivotal role in strengthening the Nurse Practitioner Training Support Scheme by ensuring Te Ao Māori and Mātauranga Māori principles are embedded across every part of the programme.

You'll lead the implementation of a Māori Capabilities Framework that supports equity and improved outcomes for Māori Nurse Practitioners in training. This mahi is about more than mentoring — it's about fostering cultural safety, building authentic connections, and championing whānau ora approaches that recognise the spiritual, cultural, and community contexts of each trainee.

Each role is designed to reflect and respect local tikanga, kawa, and iwi aspirations, while contributing to the national vision of equity and workforce development.

What you'll do:
  • Provide mentorship and pastoral support to NP candidates, ensuring their training journey is mana-enhancing and culturally safe.
  • Strengthen connections between NP candidates, whānau, hapū, iwi, and communities across the region.
  • Work alongside Regional Programme Coordinators, NP Leads, PHOs, tertiary providers, and governance groups to embed cultural safety throughout the programme.
  • Represent Māori perspectives within regional and national forums and contribute to cross-regional learning and collaboration.
  • Support the development of a culturally competent Nurse Practitioner workforce pipeline that reflects Aotearoa's diversity.
What you'll bring:
  • Demonstrated deep understanding of tikanga Māori, kawa, and mātauranga Māori, with recognition by local iwi/hapū.
  • Experience providing cultural mentorship or guidance within health or education.
  • Ability to build trusted relationships with whānau, hapū, iwi, Pacific communities and professional networks.
  • Strong communication and advocacy skills, with a commitment to equity and hauora outcomes.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with flexibility across regional and national settings.
  • Full NZ driver's licence and proficiency with digital tools and MS Office.
This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of health leadership — ensuring that NP candidates are supported, empowered, and celebrated throughout their training journey and into their roles as newly qualified Mātanga Tapuhi Nurse Practitioners .

Join us in making a difference for health equity and the Nurse Practitioner workforce of tomorrow.
