The Department of Natural History has a large, active, and internationally-recognized research program. The collection of the department is significant in its size, breadth, and international importance. The department has two curatorial sections: Vertebrate Zoology and Invertebrate Zoology. We are currently seeking a Collections Specialist 2 within the Vertebrate Zoology Section, with a focus on Birds & Mammals. THE OPPORTUNITY Reporting to the Associate Curator, the Collections Specialist 2, Birds & Mammals is responsible for the care, maintenance, and development of the Birds & Mammals collection. You will provide curatorial support to researchers and public visitors by assisting with collection access, research, and outreach activities. Here's what you will do: Collection Management: * Responsible for the long-term preservation, care, and maintenance of the Birds & Mammals collection in accordance with current best practices and ROM policies, including: * Cleaning and maintaining storage areas and collections * Preparing and applying preventative conservation treatments * Monitoring environmental conditions and pest management * Maintaining and updating collection databases * Inventorying, cataloguing, and numbering specimens * Accessioning new acquisitions * Managing loans and transfers * Overseeing collection moves and reorganizations * Preparing specimens for research and exhibitions * Managing specimen data and ensuring its accuracy and accessibility Research Support and Access: * Assist researchers and public visitors with collection access, providing information and guidance on collection use. * Prepare specimens for research, exhibitions, and educational purposes. * Support research activities within the section. * Provide general support for the curatorial staff in the section. Outreach and Public Engagement: * Participate in outreach activities to promote the collection and its significance. * Assist with the development and installation of exhibitions. * Provide tours and presentations to visitors. Who you are: * You have a Bachelor's degree in Zoology, Biology, or a related field. * You have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in museum collections management, specifically with natural history collections, with a focus on Birds & Mammals. * You possess a demonstrated knowledge of the care, preservation, and handling of Birds & Mammals specimens. * You have experience using collection management databases. * You possess excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. * You are able to work independently and as part of a team. * You have a strong attention to detail. * You are proficient in Microsoft Office Suite applications. Assets: * Experience with Specify software. * Experience with digitization projects. * Experience with taxonomic identification of birds and mammals.
