Mandate of the division

Based on its extensive Collection, exhibitions, programs, and research opportunities, the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) is a leading voice in advancing knowledge, promoting public understanding, and widening thought and debate on architecture, its history, theory, practice, and role in society today. The guiding purpose of the Collection is to make comprehensive and integrated bodies of material available for advanced, interdisciplinary research in order to reveal the changing character of thought, culture, and intellectual circles of the past, and point to the future of architectural thinking and practice.

Job summary

The responsibilities of this job include providing leadership to the strategic thinking about and management of the physical and digital collection (prints and drawings, archives, and photography collection). This requires a holistic view with an emphasis on the preservation, movement and administration of the collection in conjunction to CCA`s curatorial programs. The Head, Collection Management is responsible for the vaults management, the collection management system, for planning and decision making on incoming and outgoing loans and acquisitions as well as procedures and policies. The incumbent supervises the team assigned to loans, circulating works and collection database and collaborates closely with the Curatorial divisions (Research, Programs and Publications) and Communications.

Key responsibilities

  • Designs and oversees strategies for collection management
  • Strategizes optimization and increased efficiency of vault space, in collaboration with the Head, Collection Access, the Head, Conservation and Preservation and the Head, Buildings and Grounds
  • Provides leadership to the team of technicians and support scheduling tasks for reference, archiving, loan, and exhibition processes
  • Develops the strategic vision for the long-range planning of the Collection databases, its content and its in-house systems requirements; responsible for relevant technologies and policies/processes; generates reports, and develops a strategic vision for standardization, accurate documentation and the principles and practice of resource sharing
  • Is responsible for the Collection Emergency Preparedness Plan and develops, maintains and improves collection care protocols, policies and procedures in collaboration with the Head, Conservation and Preservation
  • Supervises loan and budget planning and management (in collaboration with external partners) of the Coordinator, Loans and Acquisitions as well as procedures for CCA collection and incoming loans for exhibitions, including CCA traveling exhibitions
  • Supervises accessioning of collection acquisitions and donations in collaboration with the Archivist and the Curator, Photography and New Media
  • Oversees the planning of object movements for research, reference, loans, and reproductions
  • Manages insurance and risk management of the Collection, in collaboration with the Finances department and recommends adjustments when required
