Job description

Context

The MIAM project, supported by the Carnot Institute Ingénierie@Lyon, offers a 36-month PhD position within the Laboratory of Tribology and Dynamic Systems (LTDS UMR CNRS 5513, Ecole Centrale de Lyon, Ecully, France). This research work is part of a close collaboration between the DySCo teams of LTDS and partner laboratories such as LAMCOS (INSA de Lyon) and the French Technical Industrial Center (CTI) for Plastics and Composites (IPC). The scientific objective is to overcome the challenges related to the variability of recycled plastic materials by developing machine learning and statistical inference strategies capable of ensuring stable production quality despite the heterogeneity of material sources.

The core of the work will focus on developing an original learning framework to merge real experimental data with synthetic data from numerical simulations. The candidate will have to design robust predictive models, often referred to as digital twins, to ensure real-time process control. This approach aims to drastically reduce the implementation time for new innovative materials while maintaining strict physical fidelity, ensuring that the models are not mere statistical correlations but reflect mechanical reality.

Case Study

The main application case selected for this research is the development of a virtual sensor applied to rheology within IPC's processing lines. By instrumenting the mixing and injection stages, the doctoral student will seek to predict the final material properties, such as viscosity and granule behavior, as a function of machine settings. This case offers an ideal study ground for testing the resilience of algorithms to changing production conditions.

Profile Sought

The profile sought for this PhD is that of a candidate with a strong dual competence in artificial intelligence and physical materials modeling. Proficiency in programming tools and an awareness of industrial issues are essential to successfully carry out the missions of this project. The work will take place primarily at the École Centrale de Lyon, with regular exchanges between the Ecully, Villeurbanne, and Oyonnax sites, and will benefit from a high-level scientific environment dedicated to innovation in materials and processes.

Type of Contract

The contract will be a fixed-term contract of the doctoral contract type 'with activity (dissemination of scientific information and/or expertise)' managed by Centrale Lyon. The remuneration will be approximately €2035 net per month for 36 months.
