Job description

Your Role

Your entry into the profession determines how quickly you can truly do something. At Vogel, you get more than just support right after graduation: you work on real mandates from day one, get early direct contact with managing directors of medium-sized companies, and learn consulting where it matters most—close to the client. You will take over your own client responsibility step by step—noticeably faster than in large firms, where junior professionals only support for years.

Vogel is one of Germany's most successful medium-sized consulting firms—several thousand companies trust us with their tax, commercial, and strategic issues—and is developing it into the leading consulting platform for the mid-market. Your core focus is tax consulting: the area where you will grow professionally the fastest and which lays the foundation for every further career step.

You have completed your studies or are about to—business administration, tax law, business law, or a comparable field—ideally with initial practical experience. You will work on real mandates from day one under the professional guidance of a Manager Tax. Vogel supports you financially and in terms of time with your master's degree or tax advisor examination—for example, with a continuing education budget of €25,000 for the tax advisor examination. The development leads to a Manager or Expert role in approximately two to four years.

Your Responsibility

Client work from day one

  • Create annual financial statements according to commercial law for medium-sized corporations and partnerships—independently, with professional sparring support from your manager.

  • Prepare tax returns for companies and entrepreneur families and present your results yourself.

  • Support ongoing client management—technical clarifications, preparation of consulting meetings, tax audits, and objection proceedings. You will be in client contact from the beginning, not in the back office.

Technical Depth and Structuring

  • Participate in structuring consulting—reorganizations, succession planning, structuring. Here you will learn that tax consulting is essentially analytical work, not document processing.

  • Develop an initial personal area of expertise—an industry, a tax area, a tool—that you will be recognized for.

  • Actively drive your exam preparation forward. Vogel will support you, but you bring the ambition.

Tooling and Automation

  • You will work in a modern Tax Tech environment: digital document workflows, automated analyses, and AI tools are part of our daily routine, not futuristic concepts.

  • Use AI as a matter of course for research, drafting, analysis, and client communication. Repetitive tasks are a challenge for you to automate, not a destiny.

  • Contribute your own ideas on how client work can be faster and better—and implement them in our digitalization initiatives.

Your Prospects

What you will have delivered after 6 months:

  • You will be working on your own mandates and taking responsibility for initial annual financial statements with senior review.

  • You will have actively supported initial client meetings—preparation, your own contributions, follow-up.

  • You will be proficient in the Vogel Tax Tech environment and use AI in your daily work.

What you will have delivered after 12 months:

  • You will be independently responsible for the monthly financial statements of several clients—independent preparation, initial technical review, escalation only for special issues.

  • You will take on initial training and sparring responsibility for working students and interns.

  • You will have concretely started your master's or exam preparation plan—supported by Vogel.

What you will have delivered after 24 months:

  • You will have found your own area of specialization—an industry, a tax area, a tool—and are developing noticeable depth there.

  • You will independently manage a partial client base; the Manager Tax will only be the escalation point for complex special issues.

  • You are a concrete candidate for the next level.

Where the position is developing:

The next step after the tax advisor examination is Manager Tax (management career) or Expert Tax (technical career)—both equivalent. The path to it is created by contribution, not by years of service; we do not have an automatic progression of "more experience equals higher level."

What you bring

Experience & Track Record

  • Completed or nearly completed studies in Business Administration, Economics, Business Law, Tax Law, or a comparable field—ideally with above-average performance.

  • Ideally, initial relevant practical experience—an internship or a working student position in tax consulting, auditing, consulting, TAS, or a comparably demanding environment. Even better if you have already handled real client or technical work.

  • Proactivity outside the curriculum—a project, an entrepreneurial engagement, an initiative that you not only attended but also helped shape.

  • Profiles that do not fit this template but bring substantial tax or technical depth are explicitly invited—we evaluate based on contribution, not label. Specifically: trained tax clerks with completed studies, career changers with clear motivation for tax law, law graduates with a tax law focus.

Skills & Work Style

  • You work analytically and structurally—you break down a task into sub-steps before you start, and deliver results that are logically structured.

  • You communicate clearly and reliably—both in writing and in the first client meeting. You are not afraid of topics you do not yet fully master.

  • You work with AI as a natural tool—research, drafting, analysis, client communication. Anyone who sees AI as a threat is in the wrong place here.

  • You work quickly without sacrificing quality—in a team without buffers, what you deliver is used directly.

Mindset & Personality

  • You enjoy the technical depth of tax consulting and do not see it as a transitional phase to another career.

  • You have the ambition to set the highest standard in everything you deliver—not because someone is checking, but because mediocrity personally bothers you.

  • You have the humility to learn from experienced practitioners—and at the same time, the ambition to make your own contributions that move the team forward.

  • You think entrepreneurially—you take responsibility for your clients, not for your hours.

What you will NOT find with us

  • Not a support job where you sort documents for the manager. You work on real mandates, with real client contact, with real responsibility.

  • Not a classic trainee program. You don't rotate through three stations with slide presentations. You start with client work and take on responsibility there from day one.

  • Not a Big Four pyramid without client contact in the first few years. With us, you see clients from day one.

  • Not a family-run business without growth ambitions. We build specializations and industry depth, we don't just manage.

  • Not a corporate corset where you wait for promotions. Growth here comes from contribution, not from years of service.

FAQ

1. What is Vogel—and where do you work?

Vogel is one of Germany's leading mid-market consultancies—a family business since 1959, from Aalen—and is building it into the leading consulting platform for the mid-market. We are growing at several locations: in Aalen/Ostwürttemberg as our established headquarters and in Munich as a new hub. At both, we are looking for people across all functions—from tax consulting and general consulting to the strategic teams building the platform.

2. How should the salary bands be understood?

Intentionally broad—and indicated at each point. We differentiate based on track record and market value, not by degree: scarce, highly sought-after profiles at the upper end, less scarce ones at the lower end. We calibrate exclusively on the market—two people with similar experience can earn differently with us.

3. How much—and how—do you work at Vogel?

What you achieve is measured, not the hours. However, it's also true: those looking for a 9-to-5 are not our first choice. We are looking for people who work intensively out of their own initiative because the tasks are worthwhile. How you manage your time is largely up to you. What we share: we work together in person—culture, sparring, and the best ideas emerge from daily proximity. We are not a remote company and do not have extensive home office policies; individual remote days are not a problem.

4. What is the application process like?

Lean, fast, transparent—and tiered by profile. For entry-level roles (internship, working student, entry-level professional), two interviews and a short work sample are usually sufficient; experienced roles are a bit more extensive. For selected senior roles, we are considering incorporating a joint work day in the future so that both sides can get to know each other better. Always applies: scheduled appointments, swift decisions, substantial feedback—regardless of the outcome.

5. How does variable compensation work?

Tied to performance quarterly, qualitatively assessed. The scale increases with the level: up to 20% Associate, 27.5% Manager, 35% Senior Manager, 42.5% Director, 50% VP. The expected value for good performance—you meet the requirements, set your own accents, pass the keeper test—is around 50% of the maximum; the maximum bonus is not the norm. The focus is on a holistic assessment by your supervisor: ownership, quality, learning curve, collaboration, impact.

6. How do I develop—what are the career paths?

Two active paths: Mastery (technical depth, expert career) and Pioneer (leadership, management). You choose the direction after onboarding, usually in years 1-3. Entry into the profession is not a special path, but the early part of the same journey—from working student or intern to Associate, for the best without a new application process.

7. Team, culture, vacation?

A joint lunch is an open daily offer—not mandatory; whoever wants to join does, everyone can eat anytime. In addition, dinners, social events, and offsites at regular intervals—not as a mandatory program, but because a good team also shares time outside of work. Benefits: thoughtful and substantial, not symbolic. Vacation: 28 days.

8. I know someone—is there a referral bonus?

Yes—€2,500 for every successfully filled position (no internships). Short context is enough: who you are thinking of, for which role, why. It doesn't have to be perfect, but it should be substantial.
