Job description
Your Role
The start of your career determines how quickly you can truly achieve something. At Vogel, you'll get more than just support right after your studies: you'll work on real client mandates from day one, get early direct contact with managing directors of medium-sized companies, and learn consulting where it matters most – close to the client. You'll gradually take on your own client responsibility – noticeably faster than in large firms where junior employees only do support work for years.
Vogel is one of Germany's most successful medium-sized consulting firms – thousands of companies trust us with their tax, commercial, and strategic issues – and is developing into the leading consulting platform for the mid-market. Your core area of focus will be tax consulting: the field in which you'll grow professionally fastest and which lays the foundation for every subsequent career step.
You have completed your studies or are about to – in business administration, tax law, business law, or a comparable field – ideally with initial practical experience. You will work on real client mandates from day one under the professional guidance of a Manager Tax. Vogel will support you financially and with time for your Master's degree or tax advisor examination – for example, with a continuing education budget of €25,000 for the tax advisor examination. The development path leads to a Manager or Expert role in approximately two to four years.
Your Responsibility
Client work from day one
Prepare annual financial statements according to commercial law for medium-sized corporations and partnerships – independently, with professional sparring support from your manager.
Prepare tax returns for companies and entrepreneurial families and present your results yourself.
Support ongoing client care – technical clarifications, preparation of consulting meetings, tax audits, and objection proceedings. You will be in client contact from the beginning, not in the back office.
Technical depth and structuring
Participate in structuring consulting – reorganizations, succession planning, structuring. Here you'll learn that tax consulting is essentially about thinking, not just processing documents.
Develop your own initial area of expertise – an industry, a tax field, a tool – that you'll be recognized for.
Actively drive your exam preparation forward. Vogel will support you, but you bring the ambition.
Tooling and Automation
You will work in a modern Tax-Tech environment: digital document workflows, automated analyses, and AI tools are part of our daily routine, not just future possibilities.
Use AI as a matter of course for research, drafting, analysis, and client communication. Repetitive tasks are a challenge for you to automate, not a fate.
Contribute your own ideas on how client work can be done faster and better – and help implement them in our digitalization initiatives.
Your Perspectives
What you will have delivered after 6 months:
You will be involved in your own client mandates and will take responsibility for initial annual financial statements with senior review.
You will have actively supported initial client discussions – preparation, your own contributions, follow-up.
You will be proficient in the Vogel Tax-Tech environment and use AI in your daily work.
What you will have delivered after 12 months:
You will independently be responsible for the monthly financial statements of several clients – independent preparation, initial technical review, escalation only for special topics.
You will take on initial training and sparring responsibility for working students and interns.
You will have concretely started your Master's or exam preparation plan – supported by Vogel.
What you will have delivered after 24 months:
You will have found your own area of expertise – an industry, a tax field, a tool – and will be building noticeable depth there.
You will independently manage a partial client base; the Manager Tax will only be the escalation point for complex special topics.
You will be a concrete candidate for the next level.
Where the position is developing:
The next step after passing the tax advisor examination is Manager Tax (management career) or Expert Tax (technical career) – both are equivalent. The path to get there is determined by your contribution, not by your years of service; we do not have an automatic system of "more experience equals higher level.".
What you bring with you
Experience & Track Record
Completed or soon-to-be-completed studies in Business Administration, Economics, Business Law, Tax Law, or a comparable field – ideally with above-average results.
Ideally, initial relevant practical experience – an internship or working student position in tax consulting, auditing, consulting, TAS, or a comparably demanding environment. If you have already dealt with real client or technical work, all the better.
Initiative beyond the curriculum – a project, entrepreneurial engagement, an initiative that you not only attended but helped shape.
Profiles that do not fit this template but bring substantial tax or technical depth are explicitly invited – we evaluate based on contribution, not labels. Specifically: trained tax assistants with completed studies, career changers with clear motivation for tax law, law graduates with a tax law focus.
Skills & Work Style
You work analytically and structurally – you break down a task into sub-steps before you start, and deliver results with a clear structure.
You communicate clearly and reliably – in writing as well as in initial client discussions. You are not afraid of topics you don't yet fully master.
You use AI as a natural tool – for research, drafting, analysis, client communication. Those who see AI as a threat are in the wrong place here.
You work quickly without sacrificing quality – in a team without buffers, what you deliver is used directly.
Mindset & Personality
You enjoy the technical depth of tax consulting and do not see it as a transitional phase to another career.
You strive to set the highest standard in everything you deliver – not because someone is checking, but because mediocrity personally bothers you.
You have the humility to learn from experienced practitioners – and at the same time, the ambition to make your own contributions that advance the team.
You think entrepreneurially – you take responsibility for your clients, not for your hours.
What you won't find with us
No assistant job where you sort documents for the manager. You work on real client mandates, with real client contact, with real responsibility.
No classic trainee program. You don't rotate through three stations with slide presentations. You start with client work and take on responsibility there from day one.
No Big Four pyramid without client contact in the first few years. With us, you see clients from day one.
No inherited family business without growth ambitions. We build specializations and industry depth, we don't just manage.
No corporate corset where you wait for promotions. Growth here comes from contribution, not from years of service.
FAQ
1. What is Vogel – and where do you work?
Vogel is one of Germany's leading mid-market consultancies – a family business since 1959, from Aalen – and is developing into the leading consulting platform for the mid-market. We are growing at several locations: in Aalen/Ostwürttemberg as our established headquarters and in Munich as our new hub. At both, we are looking for people across functions – from tax consulting to consulting to the strategic teams building the platform.
2. How are the salary bands to be understood?
Intentionally broad – and specified at each level. We differentiate based on track record and market value, not on degrees: scarce, highly sought-after profiles at the upper end, less scarce ones at the lower end. We calibrate exclusively on the market – two people with similar experience can earn differently with us.
3. How much – and how – is worked at Vogel?
We measure by what you achieve, not by hours. However, it's also honest: if you're looking for a 9-to-5, you're not the first choice here. We're looking for people who work intensely out of their own initiative because the tasks are worthwhile. How you distribute your time is largely up to you. What we share: we work together in person – culture, sparring, and the best ideas emerge from daily proximity. We are not a remote company and do not have extensive home office policies; individual remote days are not a problem.
4. How does the application process work?
Lean, fast, transparent – and tiered by profile. For entry-level roles (internship, working student, entry-level professional), usually two interviews and a short work sample are sufficient; experienced roles are a bit more extensive. For selected senior roles, we are considering incorporating a joint working day in the future so that both sides can get to know each other better. Always applies: scheduled appointments, swift decisions, substantial feedback – regardless of the outcome.
5. How does variable compensation work?
Tied to performance quarterly, qualitatively assessed. The scale increases with the level: up to 20% for Associate, 27.5% for Manager, 35% for Senior Manager, 42.5% for Director, 50% for VP. The expected value for good performance – you meet the requirements, set your own accents, pass the keeper test – is around 50% of the maximum; the maximum bonus is not the norm. The focus is on a holistic assessment by your supervisor: ownership, quality, learning curve, collaboration, impact.
6. How do I develop – what career paths are there?
Two active paths: Mastery (technical depth, expert career) and Pioneer (leadership, management). You choose the direction after onboarding, usually in years 1-3. Entry-level professional is not a special path, but the early part of the same journey – from working student or intern to Associate, for the best without a new application process.
7. Team, culture, vacation?
A shared lunch is an open daily offering – not mandatory; whoever wants to join can, everyone can eat at any time. In addition, dinners, social events, and offsites are held regularly – not as a mandatory program, but because a good team also shares time outside of work. Benefits: well-thought-out and substantial, not symbolic. Vacation: 28 days.
8. I know someone – is there a referral bonus?
Yes – €2,500 for each successfully filled position (no internships). A brief context is sufficient: who you are thinking of, for which role, why. It doesn't have to be perfect, but it needs to be substantial.
