Job description
Your Role
The start of your career determines how quickly you truly become proficient. At Vogel, you get more than just support right after your studies: you work on real mandates from day one, get early direct contact with managing directors of medium-sized companies, and learn consulting where it matters most – close to the client. You will gradually take on your own client responsibility – noticeably faster than in large firms where new entrants only work as support for years.
Vogel is one of Germany's most successful medium-sized consulting firms – several thousand companies trust us with their tax, commercial, and strategic issues – and is developing into the leading consulting platform for the mid-market. Your core expertise is tax consulting: the area where you will grow professionally the fastest and which forms the basis for every further career step.
You have completed your studies or are about to – in business administration, tax law, business law, or a comparable field – ideally with initial practical experience. From day one, you will work on real mandates under the professional guidance of a Manager Tax. Vogel supports you financially and timewise with your Master's degree or tax advisor examination – for example, with a continuing education budget of €25,000 for the tax advisor examination. The development leads to a Manager or Expert role in approximately two to four years.
Your Responsibility
Client work from day one
Prepare annual financial statements according to German commercial law for medium-sized corporations and partnerships – independently, with professional sparring support from your manager.
Prepare tax returns for companies and entrepreneurial families and present your findings yourself.
Support ongoing client relationship management – technical clarifications, preparation of consulting meetings, tax audits, and objection proceedings. You are in client contact from the beginning, not in the background.
Technical depth and shaping
Participate in advisory services – transformations, succession planning, structuring. Here you will learn that tax consulting is fundamentally about conceptual work, not document processing.
Develop your first own area of technical specialization – an industry, a tax area, a tool – that will be recognized for you.
Actively drive your examination preparation forward. Vogel supports you in this, but you bring the ambition.
Tooling and Automation
You will work in a modern Tax Tech environment: digital document workflows, automated analyses, and AI tools are part of our daily routine, not just a future prospect.
Naturally use AI for research, drafting, analysis, and client communication. Repetitive tasks are a challenge for you to automate, not a destiny.
Contribute your own ideas on how client work can be faster and better – and implement them in our digitalization initiatives.
Your Perspectives
What you will have delivered after 6 months:
You will be working on your own mandates and taking responsibility for initial annual financial statements with senior review.
You will have actively supported initial client meetings – preparation, your own contributions, follow-up.
You will be proficient in the Vogel Tax Tech environment and use AI in your daily work.
What you will have delivered after 12 months:
You will independently manage the monthly financial statements for several clients – independent preparation, initial technical review, escalation only for special topics.
You will take on initial training and sparring responsibility for working students and interns.
You will have concretely started your Master's or examination plan – supported by Vogel.
What you will have delivered after 24 months:
You will have found your own area of technical specialization – an industry, a tax area, a tool – and are building noticeable depth there.
You will independently manage a partial client base; the Manager Tax will only be the escalation point for complex special topics.
You will be a concrete candidate for the next level.
Where the position is developing:
The next step after the tax advisor examination is Manager Tax (management career) or Expert Tax (technical career) – both equally valued. The path to it is created by contribution, not by years of service; we do not have an automatic progression of "more experience equals higher level".
What you bring with you
Experience & Track Record
Completed or nearly completed studies in Business Administration, Economics, Business Law, Tax Law, or a comparable field – ideally with above-average grades.
Ideally, initial relevant practical experience – an internship or a working student position in tax consulting, auditing, consulting, TAS, or a comparably demanding environment. If you have already dealt with real client or technical work, even better.
Initiative beyond the curriculum – a project, an entrepreneurial engagement, an initiative that you not only participated in but also helped shape.
Profiles that do not fit this mold but bring substantial tax or technical depth are explicitly invited – we evaluate by contribution, not by label. Specifically: trained tax clerks with completed studies, career changers with clear motivation for tax law, law graduates with a tax law focus.
Skills & Working Style
You work analytically and structurally – you break down a task into sub-steps before you start, and deliver results that are built in a logical way.
You communicate clearly and reliably – both in writing and in initial client discussions. You are not afraid of topics you have not yet fully mastered.
You use AI as a natural tool – for research, drafting, analysis, client communication. Those who see AI as a threat are in the wrong place here.
You work quickly without compromising quality – in a team without buffers, what you deliver is used directly.
Mindset & Personality
You enjoy the technical depth of tax consulting and do not see it as a transitional phase to another career.
You have the ambition to set the highest standard in everything you deliver – not because someone is checking, but because mediocrity personally bothers you.
You have the humility to learn from experienced practitioners – and at the same time, the ambition to make your own contributions that advance the team.
You think entrepreneurially – you take responsibility for your mandates, not for your hours.
What you will not find with us
No support job where you sort documents for the manager. You work on real mandates, with real client contact, with real responsibility.
No classic trainee program. You don't rotate through three stations with presentation tasks. You start in client work and take responsibility there from day one.
No Big Four pyramid without client contact in the first years. With us, you see clients from day one.
No old-fashioned family business without growth ambition. We build specializations and industry depth, we do not just manage.
No corporate corset where you wait for promotions. Growth here comes from contribution, not from years of service.
FAQ
1. What is Vogel – and where do you work?
Vogel is one of Germany's leading mid-market consultancies – a family business since 1959, from Aalen – and is building the leading consulting platform for the mid-market. We are growing at several locations: in Aalen/Ostwürttemberg as our established headquarters and in Munich as a new hub. At both, we are looking for people across all functions – from tax consulting and general consulting to the strategic teams building the platform.
2. How are the salary bands to be understood?
Intentionally broad – and specified at each point. We differentiate by track record and market value, not by degree: scarce, highly sought-after profiles at the upper end, less scarce ones at the lower end. We calibrate exclusively to the market – two people with similar experience can earn differently with us.
3. How much – and how – is worked at Vogel?
What is measured is what you achieve, not hours. However, it's also honest: if you're looking for 9-to-5, you're not our primary target. We are looking for people who work intensively out of their own drive because the tasks are worthwhile. How you manage your time is largely up to you. What we share: We work together in person – culture, sparring, and the best ideas emerge from daily proximity. We are not a remote company and do not have extensive home office policies; individual remote days are not a problem.
4. How does the application process work?
Lean, fast, transparent – and tiered according to profile. For entry-level roles (internship, working student, entry-level position), usually two interviews and a short work sample are sufficient; experienced roles are a bit more extensive. For selected senior roles, we are testing the inclusion of a joint workday in the future so that both sides can get to know each other better. Always applies: timed appointments, swift decision-making, substantial feedback – regardless of the outcome.
5. How does variable compensation work?
Linked to performance quarterly, assessed qualitatively. The scale increases with the level: up to 20% Associate, 27.5% Manager, 35% Senior Manager, 42.5% Director, 50% VP. The expected value with good performance – you meet the requirements, set your own accents, pass the keeper test – is around 50% of the maximum; the maximum bonus is not the norm. The focus is on a holistic assessment by your manager: ownership, quality, learning curve, collaboration, impact.
6. How do I develop myself – what career paths are there?
Two active paths: Mastery (technical depth, expert career) and Pioneer (leadership, management). You choose the direction after onboarding, usually in years 1-3. Entry-level position is not a special path, but an early part of the same track – from working student or intern to Associate, for the best without a new application process.
7. Team, culture, vacation?
A shared lunch is an open daily offer – not mandatory; whoever wants to join does, everyone can eat anytime. In addition, dinners, social events, and offsites at regular intervals – not as a mandatory program, but because a good team also shares time outside of work. Benefits: thoughtful and substantial, not symbolic. Vacation: 28 days.
8. I know someone – is there a referral bonus?
Yes – €2,500 for every successfully filled position (not internships). A brief context is enough: who you are thinking of, for which role, why. Doesn't have to be perfect, but should be substantial.
