Job description
Your Role
The start of your career determines how quickly you truly become proficient. At Vogel, right after graduation, you'll get more than just support tasks: you'll work on real clients from day one, get early direct contact with managing directors of medium-sized companies, and learn consulting where it matters most – close to the client. You'll gradually take on your own client responsibility – noticeably faster than in large firms where entry-level employees work as support for years.
Vogel is one of Germany's most successful medium-sized consulting firms – several thousand companies entrust us with their tax, commercial, and strategic issues – and is developing into the leading consulting platform for the mid-market. Your core focus will be tax consulting: the area where you'll grow professionally the fastest and which lays the foundation for every further career step.
You have completed your studies or are about to – in Business Administration, Tax Law, Business Law, or a comparable field – ideally with initial practical experience. From day one, you'll work on real clients under the professional guidance of a Manager Tax. Vogel supports you financially and timewise with your Master's degree or tax advisor examination – for example, with a training budget of €25,000 for the tax advisor examination. The development path leads to a Manager or Expert role in approximately two to four years.
Your Responsibility
Client work from day one
Create annual financial statements according to commercial law for medium-sized corporations and partnerships – independently, with professional sparring support from your manager.
Prepare tax returns for companies and entrepreneur families and present your findings yourself.
Assist with ongoing client support – technical clarifications, preparation of consulting meetings, tax audits, and objection proceedings. You are in client contact from the beginning, not in the back office.
Technical Depth and Structuring
Participate in advisory services – reorganizations, succession planning, structuring. Here you'll learn that tax consulting is essentially about intellectual work, not just processing documents.
Develop an initial area of specialization – an industry, a tax field, a tool – that you become recognized for.
Actively drive your exam preparation. Vogel will support you, but you need to bring the ambition.
Tooling and Automation
You'll work in a modern Tax Tech environment: digital document flows, automated analyses, and AI tools are part of our daily routine, not a distant future.
Naturally use AI for research, drafting, analysis, and client communication. You see repetitive tasks as an opportunity for automation, not as an inescapable fate.
Contribute your own ideas on how client work can be faster and better – and implement them in our digitalization initiatives.
Your Perspectives
What you will have delivered after 6 months:
You are involved in client engagements and take responsibility for initial annual financial statements with senior review.
You have actively participated in initial client meetings – preparation, making your own contributions, follow-up.
You are proficient in the Vogel Tax Tech environment and use AI in your daily work.
What you will have delivered after 12 months:
You are independently responsible for the monthly financial statements of several clients – independent preparation, initial technical review, escalation only for special topics.
You take on initial training and sparring responsibility for working students and interns.
You have concretely started your Master's or exam preparation plan – supported by Vogel.
What you will have delivered after 24 months:
You have found your area of specialization – an industry, a tax field, a tool – and are building recognizable depth in it.
You manage a partial client base independently; the Manager Tax is only the escalation point for complex special topics.
You are a concrete candidate for the next level.
Where the position is heading:
The next step after the tax advisor examination is Manager Tax (management career) or Expert Tax (technical career) – both are equally valued. The path to get there is determined by your contribution, not by your years of service; we don't have an automatic progression of "more experience equals higher level."
What You Bring
Experience & Track Record
Completed or nearly completed studies in Business Administration, Economics, Business Law, Tax Law, or a comparable field – ideally with above-average performance.
Ideally, initial relevant practical experience – an internship or a working student position in tax consulting, auditing, consulting, TAS, or a comparably demanding environment. Even better if you have already handled real client or technical work.
Initiative beyond the curriculum – a project, an entrepreneurial engagement, an initiative that you not only participated in but also helped shape.
Profiles that don't fit this mold but bring substantial tax or technical depth are explicitly welcome – we evaluate based on contribution, not labels. Specifically: trained tax assistants who have completed further education, career changers with a clear motivation for tax law, law graduates with a specialization in tax law.
Skills & Work Style
You work analytically and structurally – you break down a task into sub-steps before you start, and deliver results with a clear structure.
You communicate clearly and reliably – both in writing and in initial client conversations. You are not afraid of topics you haven't fully mastered yet.
You use AI as a standard tool – for research, drafting, analysis, client communication. Anyone who sees AI as a threat is in the wrong place here.
You work quickly without compromising quality – in a team without buffers, what you deliver is used directly.
Mindset & Personality
You enjoy the technical depth of tax consulting and don't see it as a transitional phase to another career.
You strive to set the highest standard in everything you deliver – not because someone is checking, but because mediocrity personally bothers you.
You have the humility to learn from experienced practitioners – and at the same time, the ambition to make your own contributions that advance the team.
You think entrepreneurially – you take responsibility for your clients, not for your hours.
What You Won't Find With Us
No support job where you sort documents for a manager. You work on real clients, with real client contact, with real responsibility.
No classic trainee program. You don't rotate through three stations with slide presentations. You start in client work and take on responsibility there from day one.
No Big Four pyramid without client contact in the first years. With us, you see clients from day one.
No old-fashioned medium-sized business without growth aspirations. We build specializations and industry depth; we don't just manage.
No corporate corset where you wait for promotions. Growth here comes from contribution, not from years of service.
FAQ
1. What is Vogel – and where do you work?
Vogel is one of Germany's leading mid-market consultancies – a family business since 1959, from Aalen – and is building the leading consulting platform for the mid-market. We are growing at several locations: in Aalen/Ostwürttemberg as our established headquarters and in Munich as a new hub. At both locations, we are looking for people across all functions – from tax consulting to general consulting and the strategic teams building the platform.
2. How are the salary ranges to be understood?
Intentionally broad – and specified at every point. We differentiate based on track record and market value, not just on degrees: scarce, highly sought-after profiles at the upper end, less scarce ones at the lower end. We calibrate exclusively based on the market – two people with similar experience can earn differently with us.
3. How much – and how – do you work at Vogel?
We measure by what you achieve, not by hours. However, it's also true: those looking for a 9-to-5 are not our first choice. We are looking for people who work intensively on their own initiative because the tasks are worthwhile. How you manage your time is largely up to you. What we share: We work collaboratively in person – culture, sparring, and the best ideas emerge from daily proximity. We are not a remote company and don't have extensive home office policies; occasional remote days are not a problem.
4. How does the application process work?
Lean, fast, transparent – and tiered according to the profile. For entry-level roles (internship, working student, entry-level position), typically two interviews and a short work sample are sufficient; experienced roles are a bit more extensive. For selected senior roles, we are exploring introducing a joint workday in the future so that both sides can get to know each other better. The principle always applies: scheduled appointments, swift decisions, substantial feedback – regardless of the outcome.
5. How does variable compensation work?
Tied to performance quarterly, assessed qualitatively. The scale increases with the level: up to 20% for Associates, 27.5% for Managers, 35% for Senior Managers, 42.5% for Directors, 50% for VPs. The expected value for good performance – you meet the requirements, set your own accents, pass the keeper test – is around 50% of the maximum; the maximum bonus is not the norm. The focus is on a holistic assessment by your manager: ownership, quality, learning curve, collaboration, impact.
6. How do I develop – what are the career paths?
Two active paths: Mastery (technical depth, expert career) and Pioneer (leadership, management). You choose the direction after onboarding, usually in years 1-3. Entry-level position is not a separate path, but the early part of the same journey – from working student or intern to Associate, for the best without a new application process.
7. Team, culture, vacation?
A shared lunch is an open daily offering – not mandatory; whoever wants to join, does so, everyone can eat at any time. In addition, dinners, social events, and offsites at regular intervals – not as a mandatory program, but because a good team also shares time outside of work. Benefits: well-thought-out and substantial, not symbolic. Vacation: 28 days.
8. I know someone – is there a referral bonus?
Yes – €2,500 for each successfully filled position (no internships). A brief context is sufficient: who you have in mind, for which role, why. It doesn't have to be perfect, but it should be substantial.
