Job description
Your Role
Tax consulting for medium-sized businesses is relationship work. Clients stay for decades — not because of prices, but because they are understood. Several thousand medium-sized companies trust us — we are now developing the model into a Germany-wide consulting platform. Tax consulting is not one business area among many, but the core.
You are a career starter after studying economics — business administration, economics, business law, or similar. You have gained initial practical experience: a dual study program, several internships, a student trainee position in tax consulting or auditing. You start at Vogel because you want technical depth and client responsibility in your first three professional years — not a support role in a Big Four pyramid, not routine medium-sized family business.
You will work on real client mandates from day one — annual financial statements, tax returns, ongoing advice. You will be part of the line of a Manager Tax, who will guide you technically. Vogel will support you financially and with time for your Master's degree or tax advisor examination — this is the natural path to a Manager Tax or Expert Tax role.
Your Responsibility
Client Work
Preparation of annual financial statements according to commercial law for medium-sized corporations and partnerships — independently, with technical sparring support from your manager.
Preparation of tax returns for corporations and partnerships.
Support in ongoing client management — technical clarifications, preparation of consulting meetings, support during tax audits and objection proceedings.
Technical Growth
Involvement in advisory consulting (structuring, conversions, succession planning) — you will get to know the depth of consulting work on specific mandates.
Advising on private tax matters for entrepreneurial families — a separate learning field alongside corporate tax consulting.
Personal technical specialization through training, sparring with senior colleagues, preparation for the next career step (Master's degree, tax advisor examination).
Tooling & Automation
Independent work with our Tax Tech environment — we consciously go beyond DATEV plus Excel.
Use of AI tools as a natural part of work — research, drafting, analysis, client communication. Those who see AI as a threat are in the wrong place here.
Participation in internal digitalization and automation initiatives — you contribute your own ideas on how client work can be made more efficient.
Your Prospects
What you will have delivered after 6 months:
You will be involved in your own client mandates and take responsibility for initial annual financial statements with senior review.
You will have actively supported initial client meetings — notes, preparation, follow-up, own contributions.
You will be proficient in the Vogel Tax Tech environment and use AI tools in your daily work.
What you will have delivered after 12 months:
You will manage a first own client role in the line — independent preparation, initial technical review, escalation to manager only for special topics.
You will have found an initial technical specialization — an industry client, a tax area, a tool — and are building depth there.
You will have concretely started your Master's degree plan or tax advisor examination plan — Vogel will provide financial and time support.
What you will have delivered after 24 months:
You will independently manage a partial client base, with the Manager Tax only being the escalation endpoint for complex special topics.
You will take on initial technical sparring tasks for junior associates and working students.
You will be a concrete candidate for the Manager Tax or Expert Tax level after passing the tax advisor examination — the next career step is visible.
Where the position is developing:
The next career step after the tax advisor examination is Manager Tax (Pioneer, disciplinary leadership) or Expert Tax (Mastery, technical depth) — both are equivalent. Vogel supports you on the way there: financially and with time for the examination, with a clear career perspective along our Career Framework.
What You Bring
Experience & Track Record
Completed or nearly completed degree in Business Administration, Economics, Business Law, or a comparable economics-related field of study.
Initial practical experience in tax consulting or auditing — dual study program, several internships, student trainee position. We are looking for career starters who have already had hands-on experience with real client work.
Profiles that do not fit the above criteria but have substantial tax experience are expressly invited — we evaluate based on contribution, not labels. Specifically: trained tax specialists (Steuerfachangestellte), career changers with a motivation for tax law, or career starters after a specialization in tax law during law studies.
Skills & Work Style
You enjoy the technical depth of tax consulting and do not see it as a transitional phase to another career.
You communicate clearly and reliably — in writing and in initial client conversations. You are not afraid of topics you do not yet fully master.
You use AI as a natural tool — research, drafting, analysis, client communication. You see repetitive tasks as an incentive for automation, not as fate.
Mindset & Personality
You think entrepreneurially — you take responsibility for your mandates, not for your hours.
You understand client work as relationship work. Clients stay not because of prices, but because of trust.
You strive to set the highest standard in everything you deliver — not because someone is checking, but because mediocrity personally bothers you.
You are willing to engage in independent client work and learn every day. Those looking exclusively for a 9-to-5 are looking elsewhere.
What You Won't Find With Us
No support job where you sort documents for the manager. You work on real clients, with real client contact, with real responsibility.
No Big Four pyramid without client contact in the first three years. At Vogel, you see clients from day one.
No inherited medium-sized business without growth ambition. We build specializations and industry depth, we do not just administer.
No partner company with competing personal interests. We are one company with a one-firm logic — one brand, one culture, one hiring bar.
No corporate corset where you wait for promotions. Growth here comes from contribution, not years of service.
FAQ
1. What is Vogel — and where do you work?
Vogel is one of Germany's leading consultancies for medium-sized businesses — a family company since 1959, from Aalen — and is building this into the leading consulting platform for the medium-sized sector. We are growing at several locations: in Aalen/Ostwürttemberg as the established headquarters and in Munich as a new hub. At both, we are looking for people across all functions — from tax consulting and advisory to the strategic teams building the platform.
2. How should the salary bands be understood?
Intentionally broad — and indicated at every level. We differentiate based on track record and market value, not on degree: scarce, highly sought-after profiles at the upper end, less scarce ones at the lower end. We calibrate exclusively on the market — two people with similar experience can earn differently with us.
3. How much — and how — do people work at Vogel?
What you achieve is measured, not hours worked. However, it's also true: those looking for 9-to-5 are not our first choice. We are looking for people who work intensely out of their own initiative because the tasks are worthwhile. How you manage your time is largely up to you. What we share: We work together in person — culture, sparring, and the best ideas emerge from daily proximity. We are not a remote company and do not have extensive home office policies; individual remote days are not a problem.
4. How does the application process work?
Lean, fast, transparent — and tiered by profile. For entry-level roles (internship, working student, career entry), usually two interviews and a short work sample are sufficient; experienced roles are a bit more extensive. For selected senior roles, we are considering incorporating a joint working day in the future so that both sides can get to know each other better. Always applies: scheduled appointments, swift decisions, substantial feedback — regardless of the outcome.
5. How does variable compensation work?
Linked to performance quarterly, evaluated qualitatively. The scale increases with the level: up to 20% for Associates, 27.5% for Managers, 35% for Senior Managers, 42.5% for Directors, 50% for VPs. The expected value with good performance — you meet the requirements, set your own accents, pass the keeper test — is around 50% of the maximum; the maximum bonus is not the norm. The focus is on a holistic assessment by your manager: ownership, quality, learning curve, collaboration, impact.
6. How do I develop myself — what career paths are there?
Two active paths: Mastery (technical depth, expert career) and Pioneer (leadership, management). You choose the direction after onboarding, usually in years 1-3. Career entry is not a special path, but the early part of the same journey — from working student or intern to Associate, for the best without a new application process.
7. Team, culture, vacation?
A shared lunch is an open daily offer — not mandatory; whoever wants to join can, everyone can eat at any time. In addition, dinners, social events, and offsites at regular intervals — not as a mandatory program, but because a good team also shares time outside of work. Benefits: well-thought-out and substantial, not symbolic. Vacation: 28 days.
8. I know someone — is there a referral bonus?
Yes — €2,500 for every successfully filled position (not internships). A brief context is enough: whom you are thinking of, for which role, why. It doesn't have to be perfect, but it needs to be substantial.
