Global Wheat Program Assistant Researcher

CIMMYT is looking for dynamic, self-motivated, and service-oriented individuals for the position of research assistants for our Global Wheat Program (GWP) in the Science and Innovation department.

The position has a base at our CIMMYT station near Toluca, State of Mexico

and is a permanent position with benefits superior to those of law.

Specific functions:

1. Supervise and execute field and greenhouse operations for seed preparation, crossing, sowing, data collection, sampling, and harvesting.

2. Organize and supervise personnel or teams assigned to specific activities.

3. Plan and prepare materials necessary for genetic improvement and research activities.

4. Prepare planting maps.

5. Organize daily activities, such as identifying greenhouse and field trials, inoculations of rust, chemical treatments in trials, among others.

6. Follow up on field and greenhouse management with the station manager's team.

7. Participate in tasks that occur during different stages of the assigned crop cycle.

8. Report tasks performed and results obtained in the assigned project.

9. Collect data and maintain records of all activities performed in the field or greenhouse.

10. Inform your immediate supervisor about any abnormal situation that arises during the development of the assigned project, for immediate correction.

11. Attend work visits at other field trials and/or experimental stations of CIMMYT.

12. Supervise product and material inventories used and request replenishment when necessary.

13. Verify that equipment and facilities are in good operating condition and report on any required maintenance.

14. Contribute to the training and updating of knowledge and research techniques for the rest of the personnel working in the unit, as well as staying up-to-date with new research advances.

15. Perform support activities that require assistance from the head.

16. Train temporary workers and team members in research techniques; stay current on new techniques or processes.

17. Collect physiological and agronomic data to support projects.

18. Collect and process plant tissue samples using established protocols.

19. Manage and organize data in relevant databases.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Agriculture or Agronomy or Biotechnology or similar.

• 1-2 years of work experience in similar activities to those described; including greenhouse crop management (very important).

• Knowledge of agronomy, crop improvement, and interest/experience in genetics and crop improvement.

• Proficiency in computer applications, especially Microsoft Office.
